Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

In GNOME Software I sometimes see a warning that an app (usually from Flathub) has stopped receiving updates.

How do you evaluate when, or whether, an app is problematic because it is no longer receiving updates?

Doesn't matter. It's a vulnerability and if you want to use out of date programs that could be used to attack, its a choice YOU make. The important thing is, that any reader here comes away knowing that. I'm not making judgement of you using it or not, just clarifying, because this is important.
