Have a look at mailbox.org, it's a German provider of email/drive/calendar/office/conferencing. They've been around for a few decades and they use Linux and FOSS.
https://mailbox.org/en/about-us/
You can use any email client you want because they use standard IMAP and SMTP, and their non-mail services are used in the browser.
I am also happy there. Their non-mail services also support open standards, so you can use them In software that supports it. The Contacts and calendar support Cal/CardDav and the files WebDav.
My only minor gripe with them is no Jmap support, but almost no providers do.
I went with mailbox in the end and it's been pretty good so far. It's not the main reason I chose them but it is so much easier to read out "mailbox dot org" over the phone to someone than having to spell out the name of some of the other privacy-focused providers.
I am still finalizing my choices for my migration, and I am heavily leaning towards them for my email.
One question I still have is if I have a custom domain in my account, can I share it with other users in a family plan, and can they use it to create aliases in their own?
I also looked at Tuta, but I feel they are going to go the way of Proton (just a feeling in the way they communicate.) It also rubbed me the wrong way that I could not find a contact email on their site, and instead they send you to Reddit.
I found this: https://kb.mailbox.org/en/private/custom-domains/using-emails-with-a-custom-domain/#specifics-for-family-accounts
So yes, you have to use a different MX record, but you can share a domain name with your family. I switched to them this week, but haven't managed to decide on a family domain name, as we all have different last names 🙃. Will probably use multiple domains.
Thanks for the confirmation. Do you know if it is possible to connect one alias to multiple mailboxes?
And I get your pain on the domains as well. Trying to do the same here. But I will for sure have one domain for all of us only for important things like bank, mortgage and medical which doesn't get exposed to anything else.
I don't know if Mailbox does this but technically speaking it should definitely be possible, as long as the mailboxes are on the same domain. (If you cross domains it's not aliasing anymore, it's forwarding.)
I know Migadu has this feature and it works as intended.
Speaking of Migadu it's another good option but they only do email, nothing else (no calendar, no drive etc.) They have an interesting pricing model where the account owner pays for a certain tier of storage and of emails sent/received per day, but inside that account you can have as many mailboxes, logins, domains and aliases as you want. It can become cost-effective very fast, as low as 2-3 users.
My use case is that I would like for example mortgages my domain.tld to be sent to mybajd my wife's inbox.
Correct me if I misunderstood, but one of the reasons I disconsidered migadu is that only the account owner can create aliases for others to use. For me it's important that my wife can independently create aliases as she needs it.
I haven't actually set up a family account yet, so can't answer on that, sorry!
I think so but I only have an individual account with Mailbox so I've never tried this. See their help pages (under Resources), they have extensive documentation. Another option is to use the contact form on their site to ask.
I know they have this thing called "family accounts" that takes individual accounts and makes them part of a "family" so they can share stuff like files and calendars. I think it means they can also partake in custom domains. And of course each account can make their own aliases.
Keep in mind each account needs to be paid separately though. Not sure it's possible to have multiple mailboxes with different logins and self-managed aliases under the same account.
You can make free accounts and add them to a family but free accounts have some limitations, particularly about aliases.
Thanks for the info. I scoured through the docs but could not find a definitive answer. Justbsent them the question over support as suggested.
