Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I was just reading about a violation of the Canadian fisheries act that has a maximum penalty of $200k, and realized the absurdity of there ever being a maximum fine.

There should be no maximum fine on any corporate penalty given that we do not cap the size of corporations or their bank accounts.

It would be like having maximum jail terms of 25 years for immortal beings that can live to 10,000.

I've been screaming for decades now, that we need wealth caps. Why the fuck is it okay and acceptable that a single person can get full % of the entire world's wealth? Or whyneven do we allow billionaires? Or centillionaires. Nobody should be able to have a networth of over, say, 5 million dollars. You reach that limit, all your additional income goes to taxes, 100%. And, of course, if you're at, say, 4 million, the income tax should already be around 90% or so to avoid shenanigans with a rolling income / expenses scheme

When we no longer have billionaires, the game changes significantly. No longer will one single narcissist be able to accumulate power. Resources will have to be spread over the population as no single person can own a large company.

This will also limit the size of any company. A single person can have a million dollar home, a million in other things like cars, etc, and thenaybe have 2-3 millions tops to invest in companies. This means that a billion dollar company will need at least 500 relatively rich people to be share holders, and in reality it likely will be more like 5000... This will limit the size of companies, this will make smaller companies that are more focused on fewer products.

Putting this single limit in place, world wide, will change the world in an extreme way

It will also never happen until politicians will actually start listening to citizens and citizens will be educated enough to understand what they're voting for, and politicians be required to not lie... So yeah, good luck.

Good luck making a commercial passenger airplane or a submarine or a paper mill with small companies.
