Green screen technology was too expensive. Relatively easy way to put the stars in a big space versus dressing a giant soundstage.
Pretty sure diddy did videos there cause he was already burying people and wanted to write off the trip as a business expense.
Also it might be in the thirty mile zone so you don’t need to pay mileage
Also, deserts are often flat.
And free.
You don’t have to pay a city to cordon off an area to prevent people from wandering around in the back of your shot.
