I wonder if it's a generational thing. I grew up in Ottawa in the 90s and I don't recall ever using it. I knew the word but it just wasn't an everyday word for my group of friends.

Likely generational and possibly regional. There are similar things in the US. Hell honestly it may have never been a real thing on any scale.
