I don't understand. Congress is supposed to decide how we spend money and how much we tax. Why is the president doing those things?

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 133 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because Congress is letting him.

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And the citizens are letting Congress do it.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

At this point, the citizens have lost all power. They elected people based on their promises, which they haven't upheld. We have no mechanism to remove corrupt officials except violence

[–] a_wild_mimic_appears@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh, they have upheld their promises - Project 2025's agenda was in the open well in advance. Too many people actively voted for that - i can only guess at their reasons, but racism and hatred come to mind. And too many people stayed home when they shouldn't have, closing their eyes to what was happening.

[–] warbond@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

It was very in the open, but Trump said he didn't know anything about it, so the sycophants believed him.

The French will shut down their entire country if politicians try to increase the retirement age. Americans witness the collapse of democracy and do nothing.

We need to bring back the old "France Surrenders" meme and replace it with "Americans".

"Home of the brave"

Not anymore.

The other option is to boycott everything — bring the entire economy to a halt. Don’t show up to work, don’t shop, block the highways, stop paying taxes, etc. I guarantee the entire situation would be fixed in under a week.

Of course, this requires critical mass. And everyone is so conditioned to get to work on time and not endanger their next paycheck, that it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Things will have to get worse before they get better.

Because the United States is a genuine dictatorship. The only thing that matters is spat out by royal decree.

Congress the rubberstamp org ?
Why do we even need that,
to sell positions has favour to the king ?
obviously nobody believes in that parasitic institution
Why do the Russians keep the Duma ?
To shove the edicts of the king
down the throat of the population ? The broken remains of the "country" need to face it
FEDUSA is dead

It's not just this Congress rolling over to expose their bellies. The Legislative has been ceding power to the Executive for several decades, Republican and Democrat alike. They seem to think this is OK as their guy will get the power.

Having said that, I've never seen such cowardice. The Judicial is hanging in there, and yes, even this SCOTUS has voted against Trump. But our entire system is predicated on a 3-way balance of powers. Now that two of those powers are in absolute collusion, we're collapsing.
