I get that part. What about it being required to work or find housing?
Don't worry about feeling slow - I too just got what they meant. The Digital ID, which will have to be voluntarily installed via Google or Apple, will be a mandatory requirement in order to work.
Employers already have to verify employee information with the UK government in order to make sure the government will comply with the whole chain-link process of labour and wages. This is supposed, in addition to eliminating "illegal immigrants", to streamline that verification.
I haven't witnessed it but given the nationalism Britain is famous for I'm sure that the UK government has also placed some ID verification barrier to filter out all the 'dirty illegals' trying to legally acquire a home.
After all, the government already monetises every aspect of every single resident's existence. They simply must know who lives where, as the government claims ownership of all land and all properties; buying a home is just renting from them.
So what you mean is that the comment is wild conspiracy speculation. Gotchya.
Yeah, just like you don't need an active phone number to get 99% of jobs, rent 99% of houses, or open 99% of bank accounts.
A phone number being a mandatory requirement to exist in the 21st century would be a really ludicrous conspiracy theory.
These both require ID, which themselves will require permission from google or Apple.
