Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

Serbia's government is a close ally to Russia and China, while the EU has a far too soft stance on Vucic. It's time that von der Leyen stops ignoring that "dear Aleksandar" has been slowly introducing an authoritarian regime. It's time that the EU supports the Serbian protesters there.
...Yes, this is exactly, literally what I'm talking about. You can see the "dear Alexander" yourself, but you've been so thoroughly marinated in the "Russian ally" story it doesn't even register as weird.
Serbia had a military parade some days ago. The French Airforce participated.
Oh, yeah, France - a member of the EU, the bloc Serbia seeks to join - participated.
What is more troublesome is that also Chinese military participated in Belgrade, while Serbia and China bolster defense partnership with new tech and joint projects.
Quick reminder that China is a decisive supporter of Russia in its war against Ukraine, whose officials made public that "China can't afford Russia to loose the war," and that former Soviet republics in Europe have no legal status as independent states.
Serbia's government is a close ally to Russia and China, seeking to undermine democracies, and the EU's reaction has been remaining far too soft so far. I hope that changes soon.

Serbia Unveils Russia’s Krasukha EW Systems in Belgrade Parade, Raising NATO Threat Concerns
Ah, so, Serbia's simultaneously a close ally of Russia and China, seeking to undermine democracies, and also an aspiring future EU-member, that France has a parade with. Truly the duality of man. And because they buy Chinese hardware you can tell how they're a close Chinese ally , and because they buy Russian hardware a close Russian ally, and since they also bought French hardware... Really, looks like the only country they're not-no, wait, here it is.
Repeating your assertions won't make them true, nor will it make SNS less of an associate member of the EPP. This "dear Alexander" shit didn't start with Uschi, nor is it just Europe doing it. China and Russia are not Serbia's allies - but they do find it useful to have a backdoor into the EU. Likewise, the EU does not expect Serbia to actually join the EU - but then again, an EU member couldn't house German migrants or French nuclear waste. And the yanks... Of course, all this requires someone willing to play ball, which requires a level of... flexibility (last half a dozen or so paragraphs are particularly interesting). It's the exact same short-termism that resulted in Putin, except the costs outweigh any potential benefits so lopsidedly you kinda have to wonder if maybe there's people in the EC who would like their own little squad of titushki at home.
