By genocide they mean the Genocide©, a fun and engaging news story that got a bunch of people to care about something we've been noticing for years.

Not to be confused with the genocide, the reality that has been occurring for decades.

Yikes, let's not trivialize the brutality of the last 2 years, even in the context of the decades of occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

The author of the piece is Diana Buttu, "a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer and a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Best known for her work as a legal adviser and a participant in peace negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian organizations, she has since been associated with Stanford University, Harvard University, and the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU)." [src] So, I dunno man, maybe she gets to use words with thoughtful intent.
