I sleep 10 hours a night but still need to nap constantly during the day. Even 400 mg of caffeine doesn't buzz me, it just makes me feel 70% close to my normal, high energy 20s self. My daytime fatigue is so severe I've been mistaken for being drunk (even though I don't drink), and I experience a dream like brain fog around friends unless I use caffeine pills to seem present.

I know this is part of normal aging for a woman in her 30s, but it's frustrating to constantly need naps when I haven't even done anything. Sometimes you just have to biohack. Still, I feel a bit jealous of how men age differently and seem to keep loads of energy.

As an older woman, this is not normal. Please see a doctor!!

I have an autoimmune disease that comes with chronic fatigue. I understand the struggles. This is far beyond normal.

It's normal. I've had every blood and hormone test under the sun and they've come back normal. Seen lots of doctors including female ones. I'm not going to waste their time any further it's just one of those things you have to get on with as an older woman I'm not in my prime anymore.

[–] RedSeries@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 50 minutes ago (1 children)

This reads like undiagnosed sleep apnea to me. You should really talk to your doctor about getting a sleep study done. You don't need to be overweight or anything to be affected by sleep apnea and it can get worse as one gets older. I hope it's nothing too serious/just some fatigue!

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 0 points 26 minutes ago (1 children)

I don't even snore. My boyfriend's watched me sleep.

[–] sleepmode@lemmy.world 8 points 24 minutes ago

You don’t have to snore to have it.

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 18 points 1 hour ago

If you sleep 10 hour each night and still feel tired, it’s time to visit a doctor before you end up in the forever box.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 30 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I know this is part of normal aging for a woman in her 30s

Is it?? I’m not saying you don’t lose energy as you age, but what you’re describing sounds closer to a medical problem than the norm. If you’ve had conversations with your doctor and had bloodwork done then it might be normal for you, but if you haven’t checked for vitamin deficiencies you might want to. I felt similarly shit when my vitamin D was through the floor.

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (4 children)

It's normal! I've been checked up, I'm not overweight, all my bloods are fine.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Get a second opinion, please. Doctors will often not really believe women when we communicate our symptoms.

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 1 points 9 minutes ago (1 children)

I've had a second, third, and fourth opinion. 3 of those doctors were women.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 36 seconds ago

Women doctors also disbelieve women patients. It took 4 years and upwards of 20 different doctors for me to get my diganosis.

Being sleepy to the point of acting drunk is the most concerning that I read from your description. That's really what made me reach out. Just concerned for you!

[–] logos@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 hour ago

Normal for you I guess, unfortunately, but no-one else.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 1 points 18 minutes ago (1 children)

I've been told I was normal... right up until they decided I was anemic and horribly vitamin D deficient. Now I'm on iron infusions and 50,000mg vit D pills once a week.

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 1 points 8 minutes ago

My iron and Vitamin D levels are fine. They were checked recently along with various other things.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 hour ago

Drinking warm water in the morning might be a nice start to the day. Also, if you're not consistent with your caffeine, you go through withdrawal symptoms that sound a lot like that.

[–] Feyd@programming.dev 45 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Not saying it will definitely help, but if you're not even feeling it the caffeine dependency might actually be making you feel worse rather than better

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (2 children)

I don't have caffeine all the time. I only take it when I'm going to go out with friends or with my boyfriend so I'm fully lucid. I might end up switching to Adderall since I've heard that's a lot stronger than caffeine is.

[–] toofpic@lemmy.world 28 points 1 hour ago

Please, don't. If you don't have a direct doctor's recommendation, any "I think I will start using drugs because I think I will feel better" is just wrong

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 2 points 20 minutes ago

As someone that takes adderall (prescribed ofc), I would recommend not taking it to stay awake. It's not an over-the-counter medication for a reason.

[–] randamumaki@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 59 minutes ago* (last edited 58 minutes ago)

I'm 43 and I'd say that there is definitely not normal. You might want to go see a doctor.

[–] renegadespork@lemmy.jelliefrontier.net 7 points 47 minutes ago (1 children)

It sounds like you built up a tolerance and would benefit from quitting caffeine altogether. The first week or so will be a groggy hell, but once you adjust, your baseline will be much more alert.

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world -1 points 26 minutes ago

I don't have caffeine often, it's only when I'm on outings.

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 15 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

This is far from normal… 10hrs sleep + naps? I saw your answers about having blood tests done and coming back good. Is there something psychological going on? Heart problems? Hormones? (I don’t need you to confirm or deny, just consider it)

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

No, and my hormones were tested too including estrogen, thyroid, etc. all are normal!

[–] very_well_lost@lemmy.world 14 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

You may wanna consider submitting to an actual sleep study.

If you sleep 10 hours a night and still wake up feeling fatigued you're probably not getting the quality of sleep you think you are. It's possible to have sleep apnea or other issues without even knowing it, and the only way to find out is by doing a sleep study.

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 0 points 25 minutes ago (1 children)

I get very good sleep! All my tests are normal, my boyfriend has watched me sleep too. I don't even snore. My brain's just getting a little bit unfresh lol

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 16 minutes ago

"Its just a flesh wound!"

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 hour ago

Autoimmune diseases don't have specific tests, they're diagnosed only from exhibiting symptoms. There's other conditions that won't show up in blood tests either.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 58 minutes ago

My partner and I are in our 30s and this post describes how we feel during a break after a long adderall binge, or a couple days after we roll together. This is very much not a normal part of aging! We sleep 6-8 hours per night and unless we’re coming off’a a couple weeks of adderall or the like, that’s good for the day without being destroyed.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago (1 children)

You need to talk to a doctor

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 1 points 5 minutes ago

I've talked to loads and my tests have returned normal!

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 2 points 30 minutes ago

Sounds like caffeine addiction

[–] pageflight@piefed.social 15 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I'm male, but haven't heard of this level of fatigue from my female friends / wife. It does sound like having a young child though (minus the part about getting >8h sleep).

Normal or not, sounds terrible, hope it improves!

What are your consumption habits, i.e. when are you drinking your caffeine? The bioactive halflife of caffeine is about 6-8 hours, so it's in your system affecting your mind and body long after the caffeine buzz goes away. My personal rule of thumb is all the caffeine I want before noon, but a hard cutoff at 1pm

[–] meltycat@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I take my caffeine pills about an hour before I'm due to go out. Outings can be 8ish hours, but even when the caffeine is at peak amounts an hour after I take them they don't make me feel buzzed or hyper, just sort of close to normal. And this is at 400 mg.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

If you're taking 400mg at noon, you'll have 200mg in your system at 6pm, and 100mg at midnight. 100mg+ in my system by bedtime will negatively and noticeably affect my sleep in those situations. You could be exhausted due to the time you're consuming caffeine

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 1 points 22 minutes ago

One thousand percent this. I even find it hard to fall sleep with an estimated 25-50mg of caffeine left in my system sometimes, even if I still feel tired at the same time. 100mg left by that point would almost certainly cause sleep problems.

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 3 points 56 minutes ago (1 children)

Ehhh just microdose meth /s

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 30 minutes ago

What do you think Adderall is? Lol

[–] Fermion@feddit.nl 5 points 1 hour ago

If you know anyone with a sensitive nose, ask them if the place you live in smells musty or moldy. I've had family members go through similar issues also without any help from the medical system and mold was a major contributing factor. You and anyone else who lives with you will be nose blind to it and won't be able smell it without spending a week or so elsewhere.

Recently had my wife do a sleep study. We're vacillating between getting her into a CPAP machine and doing a weight loss program to help with the sleep apnea. She's just the same, constantly at a lower level of energy and life quality, it has limited her in a lot of ways in recent years.
