The actual answer is that Iran doesn’t have the fire power nor allies in the middle east to defeat the USA, and so this is one of the few levers they have to put pressure on the USA and it’s allies, sadly so far it has not worked out for them as well as they’d hoped
Ironically I’d like to thank the evil child killing régime that just a year or 2 ago was killing women for not wearing the mandatory islamic helmet for doing this, as oil stocks and demand plumet you (just like evil Russian regime) are helping the planet to decarbonise faster :)

She gets an answer that counters this sentiment, by adding context. The context is, that this didn't come from nowhere, but rather is a response to the US attack on Iran.
The thing about " defending the gulf" is a little thin, but he can't say the reason, that you've stated, on TV.

What did they think Trump was going to do if Iranian refugees asked for help? He wasn't going to send a fruit basket with a passive aggressive note.

As I mentioned in my original post Iran doesn't have the capability nor capacity to bomb America, they do not even have the capability to take out the USA on home soil, hence why they have shut the straight, to try and 'pressure' everyone who sends ships or receives goods through it to put pressure on America, they cannot win in a straight military war, they would be utterly crushed Gaza style
