During the heatwave weekend we had more excessive deaths in a few days than covid

But before any rants, lightherted question for everyone, as I'm not in one of my hating moods to rant right now. Favorite flavor of chewing gum?

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 6 days ago

just mint, there is something to the fake freshness it brings

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 6 days ago

Chewing gum is like injecting microplastics into your body.

Many a rant to be made here, but only when I get the energy to do so.

It is 2:00 AM EST in Virginia where I live.

I am have those dark thought-loop spirals or whatever, this time involving catastrophism.

Seems that rage, fury, anger, or annoyance is the trigger for these dark thought spirals.

Hmmmmm

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Honestly, I wonder if I have anger management issues.

I don't often snap at people or yell at them.

But I have gotten angry and then tried to suppress that anger because I had no recourse. It was either that or do something stupid and act on impulse.

Emotional suppression is bad for memory and other things or so they say (need to look that up sometime).

People in my immediate family snap at me or chastize me and I just wear a mask.

Anyway, took Vyvanse a while ago because it helps call me down and think clearly (but also in a very soothing way).

Have another great week, everyone! I know I'm on less frequently than I used to be, but I have been much better for limiting social media use. The quality of engagement goes up that way. Consider something similar if you've felt too much brain fog lately!

As always, communism will win.

I visited the Manchester Art Gallery today and they had these large rooms in which they acknowledged colonialism and capitalism and whatnot, which I thought was good. But they also happened to have a room on Dutch art and they described us as a brave nation becoming wealthy by finding sea routes to trade on.

Like how does that work lmao. We robbed half the world to get rich. No critical thought whatsoever in the Dutch room.

[–] Rylo@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think I've read that the Dutch East Indies (modern day Indonesia) historically was the most lucrative (i.e. highest net-profit) colony by a large margin. I cannot remember the numbers though.

[–] SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

There is no clear consensus but it is believed the Dutch East Indian Company was worth several trillion dollars adjusted to current day inflation.

No other company to this day came close. It employed up to a million people versus 800k by the rest of European colonial companies combined. It owned over 4000 ships and operated a private army to do whatever it wanted.

Over here in Belgium the government has stopped some restrictions on so called flexi job which are jobs in which you can work for some time without having to pay taxes on your wages. They are used by people who want to work in places like bars and cafes next to their regular job to make some extra money. The rules were adjusted so that it would be easier to get such jobs and that you can work more hours. Lots of people were critical of this because this also means less income from taxes and we already have a heavy deficit. But it just had to be done! The 'market' asks for more flexibility.

The government is now saying something needs to be done against all the flexijobs as it is costing them tax money. Like liberals are so incredibly stupid it is not funny anymore.

Capitalism is when no time nor space to sex your partner (commodification of housing is infuriating)

[–] SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or no climate even. Ain't nobody getting down to it when you have been cooking in 40 degree weather all day with night temps at 33 degrees. You'd have to be surgically removed from eachother the way you'd be sticking skin to skin.

I recently was talking to a guy in a bar, but we didn't go home with eachother since we both still live with our parents. We lost contact after that.

Portland Timbers fans had a communist flag waving at their match against Seattle today

Dear salty Egyptians, US Americans and now bafflingly British people: There is no universe where Argentina is somehow the most racist country on earth, just because they beat you at a stupid sports game/make you feel better about your own way worse racism.

I'm now convinced that the Mossad has worked overtime to get the world cup slop viewers to hate and believe that Argentina is somehow the most anti black, genocidal and Nazi country on earth, it's wall to wall on all my feeds and pissing me off that people are this ignorant.

[–] SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 week ago

England has hundreds of years of genocide, slave trade and colonialism in their history but you know Argentina bad because some people are racist

There is this american-chinese influencer doing a series flying random people into China and he got a random american from Texas into Yun'nan 😂 he met him while trespassing his ranch, turns out the guy is surprisingly open minded agreed to go to China and managed to get him dressed as a PLA soldier 😂

This summer in Europe is really bad. There has been near zero rain and it's burning from the south of Spain to the north of England.

The extreme heat is gone in Belgium at least. It's warm but it still cools down at night. But it's just so incredibly dry.

Every once in a while I think about how easy it would be for me to get ICE'd in the US if I went. Country I'm from has a red passport. If I speak my native language it is quite likely I will be searched. ("Friend" of mine briefly got taken away for questioning by ICE at the airport (Seattle if anyone is wondering) for speaking the same language, was let go after). There is no way I will keep a straight face for the "are you and have you been associated with any communist parties" question. If I ever went I would probably get a different phone, throw away my old one just in case. Not that I want to go to the US, but I have always wanted to visit NY and Seattle.

[–] chesmotorcycle@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 6 days ago

I don't blame you. I don't feel safe in the US even though my outward appearance and language are seen as "normal" here. But Seattle and the Pacific Northwest are great. New York is, how do I put this, both incredibly overrated and a perfect mirror of the US.

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wishing everyone the strength and hope to find a way forward that's not as damaging.

Thinking about how many conservatives watch videos of girls in skimpy clothes shooting guns. Super performative. Surely you guys can just go read playboys like the rest of us

It be some grim fuckin' times, folks. Been more active my org lately with all the unemployed down-time I have. Got an interview on Saturday.

Despite having all my time occupied; some of my most cathartic and stress-relieving moments in life is to get shitfaced and tell the more rabid, near-irredeemable types of fascist reactionaries to end their own life. Always a good time.

We have reached the second highest alarm phase regarding drought and ground water levels here in Belgium. We are just three weeks into summer and there is no serious rain in sight. I am legit contemplating stocking water right now.

There was this supposed German tourist who went to the world cup and he went viral because of his overly positive view of America and I feel like everyone with a brain could instantly tell this guy was a propaganda tool
