"Trump raises taxes on Americans yet again."

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 15 points 9 hours ago

The 50 per cent rate is being imposed in response to what a senior administration official described as Canada's retaliation against U.S. trade policy and its discrimination against U.S. motor vehicles, dairy and alcohol.

Funny, because just about two days ago he said it was a response to smoke. It's almost like he's a demented old man who can only remember he's angry but not what about.

Come on Canada, put a tax on services by 50%. I bet Netflix, Google, Amazon and Apple will have talk with Trump.

[–] rImITywR@lemmy.world 15 points 10 hours ago

We had that ready to be implemented. Then the current government killed it.

Carney will say "elbows up" then offer the USA concessions.

Time to cut off hydro, oil and potash.

[–] DrakeAlbrecht@lemmy.world 20 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Hit us where it really hurts.

Cut off maple syrup.

[–] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

They’ll just corn syrup that shit.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 9 points 11 hours ago

Well, those are tariffs. It's the US already cutting them all by themselves.

I believe US gets most of its aluminum from Canada

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 hours ago

Yes, from Quebec. They have a huge surplus of hydro electric.

If this doesn’t bring American booze back to Canadian stores, I don’t know what will.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 7 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Fuck that! That shit can rot.

Don’t blame us for that swill.

“If you don’t clean up this mess I caused, I’ll hit my kids every time you try and help them!”

I suppose the tariffs will cause some decrease in Canadian exports to the US, resulting in some economic suffering, but as we find other markets, the US tariffs will become increasingly irrelevant to everyone but Americans.

yes bring back the digital tax

[–] Isthereanybodyoutthere@piefed.ca 8 points 10 hours ago

Was so disappointed when Carney backed down on that tax. Goes to show that there’s nothing to be gained by playing nice.
