Wow, the company that says they're "All-in" on AI is using a shitty AI filter to try and make games on their hardware look better? I'm shocked- SHOCKED, I say.

Operative word in that sentence was "try." Never said they succeeded.

If people like tv motion smoothing (idk why but they do) then they'll love this 😔

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do they? I'm amazed how many people prefer when it's turned off. Like it's one of the few true tech enthuist tricks I can quickly do for people

Look at all the people "fixing" shows by posting ai frame gen of them on YouTube 😔

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 6 points 1 day ago

They'll slopify your frames, slopify your games, and slopify your brains.

[–] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

It's not to make it better at all, but to give it that stupid AI Photo look.

To be fair, DLSS (aka Deep Learning Super Sampling) was an ML filter from the start.

I'm all for dunking on it cause it sucks, but the AI bit is basically in the name.

[–] steelplatedmech@piefed.ca 1 points 15 hours ago

I thought DLSS tried to retain the original look to make it look better at lower resolutions as opposed to changing the visuals like it is being run through a "beauty" filter.

Wasn't it supposed to interpolate frames, not alter the whole look of the artwork? (I am ignorant of how DLSS works exactly)

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yes, but it has to make up details to do that because it gets a lower resolution image, or for frame gen it gets two frames it needs to interpolate

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 16 points 2 days ago

if I understand right, DLSS (outside frame generation, a relatively newer DLSS feature) isn't interpolating frames, it's upscaling frames. and its never before altered the look beyond just upscaling it.

this new shit is definitely a different direction for DLSS and it sucks and I hate it

You can write a shader that drastically alters the artwork too, and DLSS is basically a closed source ML shader running on a separate chip (come at me gamedevs 😤)

edit: tho don't get me wrong it does suck. I don't know why would I ever want a face filter in a video game

Actually I can see that being amazing as like a joke mod option. Imagine playing like Fallout or something and you can flip a toggle to make everyone look like handsome Squidward 😂

[–] Bryan065@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago

Now I want a fallout: new Vegas remaster but every ghoul is handsome Squidward...

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I want Doom with a Teletubbies filter.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

Because who doesn't want uncanny semi-realistic faces on Bethesda's abysmal facial animations?

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

There has been machine learning for decades, but you're right in that interpolating frames is quite different from the way generative AI works. Both DLSS versions rely on a form of neural network but the latest ones are diffusion models which are more controversial, for reasons I'm sure you know.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

We don't want their slop.

[–] AlteE@programming.dev 4 points 2 days ago

Does it mean that devs can turn it back to DLSS 4?

[–] ChristerMLB@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

that's about what I thought. Will be interesting to see what devs do with it – but I really hope they don't just start making games that only look right on Nvidia hardware.
