Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules

  1. ๐Ÿ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.

  3. ๐Ÿงฌ Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.

  4. ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!

  5. ๐Ÿ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      โœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      โŒ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/

  6. ๐Ÿ“ฌ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 ๐Ÿ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 ๐Ÿ–) will be removed.

  7. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sรญ, por favor [Spanish/Espaรฑol]

  8. ๐Ÿฟ Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.

At a previous IT job, the department had been around quite a while. User accounts didn't provide a start date - at least not one that I could see - but there were ways you could estimate the general length of time the user had been with the department.

A few times, some aspect of those ways would cause a configuration or processing issue. For a while I was the only person handling ... That department. Almost universally, after I fixed and explained the problem, the people having these difficulties would, mostly jokingly, complain about being old. I would say "you're just a legacy user!" (or similar things) It almost always made them laugh.

So - I wouldn't call you old. You're a legacy and I appreciate your tenure!

@cannedtuna with the advancement of tech and the downfall of democracy into technofuedalism, it feels as if a million years have passed since now and 2004.

People who weren't alive during 9/11 may as well be a different species to those who were. Its similar to someone from 1890 being dropped into 1960. Except its a much shorter timeframe.

22 years were always long, especially when you are talking about the edge times just before there were massive changes.

Take for example 1913 vs 1938 in Austria. (Ok, technically it's 25 years, but it's not much more than 22 years.)

In this time span you had:

  • Monarchy, Austrohungarian Empire, at peace
  • WW1 starts (1914)
  • Austria loses WW1 (1918), Monarchy fails, first Austrian Republic is created.
  • First radio station goes live (1924)
  • Roaring 20s
  • The head of government makes a coup, declaring the Federal State of Austria (Stรคndestaat), a fascist dictatorship. (1934)
  • The Nazis take over Austria (1938)

You can find similar periods of rapid change in every country. For the US look at e.g. the independence war or the civil war. Or the time before, during and after WW2.

Yes, we are in a time of somewhat rapid change, but neither is that unique, nor is it especially rapid.

And the comparison between 1890 and 1960 is entirely invalid. Much more changed in this time frame than between 2004 and 2026.

The Singularity is coming.

This feeling of 'a million years' of change happening in a few decades will only accelerate if current trends continue. Then it will happen in one decade. Then five years. Then one year. Then a matter of months. Then a matter of days. When it starts changing so fast that nobody can even keep up with it, the Singularity has arrived.

Is the singularity coming though? Exponential curves have a way of stopping. This can be s-shaped where it ends at a new level, or it can crash, or other fun shapes. In the real world things don't go to infinity... except for actual singularities (mostly black holes).

Moore's law has basically ended, for example. Chips aren't doubling the number of transistors every 2 years anymore (since 2010 or so). Cell phones have stopped evolving recently, and are basically all identical now.

My grandmother was around when the first car arrived in her county, when the Wright Brothers first flew, when radio and television arrived, through commercial flight, when the first satellite orbited the earth and when humans first walked on the moon. She got a phone and the Internet, lived through the discovery of the shape of the DNA molecule and vaccines that wiped out smallpox.

In the USA the y changed from having the KKK being a powerful party to having civil rights laws and banning Jim Crow laws, through the roaring 20s and the great Depression, and through the New Deal and Reagan's dismantling of the guardrails that kept capitalism surviving without killing the host.

I'd say the changes of the 21st century so far - while noteworthy and important - are not faster than the changes of the 20th century.

To be honest, I think the changes of the 19th century were even more massive. The step function of work being limited to what humans or animals could do to machines altered our society and our relationship to the world in ways unequalled since agricultural societies evolved. Railroads, telegraphs, electricity, steam ships. We discovered germ theory and electromagnetism and evolution. Amazing.
