Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1828 readers
756 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

I debated posting this, but it's a lazy, rainy Saturday and this is the hot topic, why not?

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards? AdmiralPatrick
  2. What sanction did they impose? Community ban. Additionally, three of my communities were on the tesseract ban list.

I was the one of the first downvotes on the latest post here: https://lemmy.today/post/57202811 which probably instigated the ban.

Aaaand I was linking to the Admiral's rant all over lemmy, which may have been part of it.

Now, this kinda sucks because I liked tesseract up until I couldn't mod my own communities anymore, finding out later that they were on the ban list. Of course when a locked post comes up trying to make sense of the community blocks, calling them unstable and unmoderated, I'm gonna downvote that shit.

My username wasn't even on the original ban list, just those communities.

There's nothing toxic or unmoderated about anything I run. Not to mention that one of those communities has barely over 100 subscribers and exists just to post a few daily news articles from independent, Canadian sources.

I know nothing about the ban list makes any sense, but blocking three small news communities with posts that rarely get more than two comments and twenty upvotes is crazy. He would have had to search and dig and dig just to find them.

It's extra nuts considering my brandnewsentence community gets wayyyy more feisty comments than the rest put together, and it's not blocked.

So there's your drama, it's a poor consolation prize for the loss of a pretty good front end. I'm looking forward to the fork and any updates on the ban list.

The crashout is been real. It's nice to see pretty much everyone joining together to say secret blacklists are unacceptable

I was on the verge of leaving the fediverse because of all the stupid instance politics and tankie horseshit. But it is very refreshinging to see everyone agree that this dude is a turd.

Watching him double down on this and claim he was justified is insane to me. Dude has completely destroyed any FOSS rep he had, and for what?

Does curating your feed not suffice?

[–] Ostrakon@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

That frankly requires a level of effort I'm not willing to put into this place. I mostly just look at everything federated from lemmy.world, just subscribing to certain communities, I am locked in a bubble of opinions I already agree with which is probably even more dangerous than being annoyed by people I disagree with.

Mood. That kind of thing was low-key why I gave up on trying to persist on reddit. Doesn't matter as much if it's just one app here but it's a shitty precedent to bring into a place where people are championing transparency

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I just read the post you linked to to try and see the explanation for using secret blocklists....

And it is just typical standard fascist arguments.

Talking about how some communities are dangerous, calling users "petulant children" and just giving clear authoritarian talking points about how how the dev knows best.

It is completely unhinged.

Now, obviously, we all have come across communities and users that we prefer wasn't a part of the feddiverse, that is fine, we are allowed to think that.

However, you can't go around and arbitrarily blocking users and communities for others, and especially not using a secret list.

At the very least, if you're gonna abuse your influence with a double-secret shadowban list, you gotta keep that to the worst of the worst - so only assholes would even notice.

This dunderfuck filtered the word "perchance."

I'm not sure if this is the reason, but perchance is an AI image and text generator. The devs of perchance have a community on Lemmy

This is like the third(?) time that some unskilled programmer has forked Lemmy because they were upset that, somehow, leftists exist on a platform built by leftists.

Inevitably, they "fix" the situation by implementing fresh liberal ideas like heavy censorship without even respecting their users right to choose. They just can't help but wanting to be Reddit landlords.

[–] Shatur@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

First was Piefed, third was Tesseract, but who was the second? Just trying to keep up with all the drama 😅

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

i'm pretty sure there was an attempt pre-piefed to make .world have its own fork or something, and was going to be entirely java or some silly shit

idk i have a bad memory and know barely anything about web development

Turbolibs keep crashing out trying to suppress us in our own spaces, when no one forced them to be here, and no one’s stopping them from running their own spaces with our open source code. In fact we’ve long encouraged it.

Also, we’re not trying to suppress them in their own spaces (and certainly not crashing out over them), so they can’t claim do be doing this in retaliation.

[–] LeonTreatsky@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The libs are lucky that they're allowed on this platform in the first place.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

people didn't like my post saying it was their fault and no reflection on why people were upset?? It must just be people with a grudge against me

But yeah this entire saga is someone upset people don't like having things hidden from them in code especially when it effects everything and users have absolutely no control

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

He seems to think the people "brigading" him are the so called "toxic" people he tried to exclude in the first place. He hasn't clued in that most of us (probably) are pissed off for exactly the reasons you say. Being called a toxic malcontent with a community full of vitriol isn't great.

[–] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What does AdmiralPatrick and PirateSoftware have in common?

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 3 days ago

Willing to go out of the way to anger anyone that would be be supportive?

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Lol. Lmao, even.

Bro is genuinely furious that nobody sees him as the savior of the fediverse guiding the normies the way his own ego does.

edit: okay, I admit, I was wrong... There are at least a few of you.

This is a different person from the PieFed dev, right? If I had nickel for each time a dev of a popular fediverse software tried to sneak secret censorship into their software... well you get it. Admittedly this one seems way worse than the piefed one. That was reversed, right?

I just don't get how anyone would think users would want or even be remotely ok with this.

Oh yeah PTB, obviously. Banning for downvoting a single post has got to be one of the worst reasons imaginable.

[–] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

The piefed stuff has never been secret. If you set up a piefed instance, the options and toggles are right there in the admin settings, and can be turned off by the admins.

Opinionated fediverse devs writing apps that create the environment they want is a good thing when the bells and whistles they add in can easily be identrified, toggled and adjusted by end users and admins. This is what piefed does. Rimu coding the sort of thing he wants to use is better than Rimu coding nothing because he's not creating something meaningful to him.

It's very different to the tesseract situation, in which the blacklists were obfuscated, so that people wouldn't even realise they were missing content, and didn't know how to disable the blacklist even if they did realise it existed.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I do feel like piefed should disclose what settings are enabled on the server we're using. Many of us came to the fediverse to get away from algorithms.

[–] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It does disclose it to the admins. I'm not sure how you would disclose it to general users? It's not really a fediverse norm to expose admin settings to everyone. Though now that you say it, that might be a good thing to normalise?

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 7 points 3 days ago

Transparency of things that can affect a user's experience is always a good thing to normalize to me. Maybe these admin setting values could be exposed with the API so apps and the server finder sites can show them?

[–] davel@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

What should be exposed is something of a balancing act. Instance federation is exposed. The slur filter isn’t, presumably so people don’t game it. I think history shows that the lead Lemmy devs don’t in principle object to exposure, but practicality does factor in.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

I didn't hear about the piefed thing getting reversed. Great, if so.

But yeah, different person.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

up until I couldn't mod my own communities anymore, finding out later that they were on the ban list.

Considering how wholesome and cool your communities are, this is absolutely bonkers to me. You don’t mod any communities remotely offensive or extreme, wtf? And they obviously aren’t unmoderated either.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Thank you for saying so!

It was just the three news communities. I would be way more indignant if Cool Rocks was on there.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (4 children)

No idea what this is all about, so I read whomever's "elephant in the room" post on the tesseracts sub, and good god it sounds like someone in the throes of a mental health problem.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 20 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

PSA: The Tesseract frontend includes a hardcoded hidden instance blacklist with all leftist and trans-friendly instances.

TLDR: they were secretly censoring the Fediverse and silencing human rights activists via a Lemmy client frontend

It’s funny that this guy got all sorts of support when he originally “left” and slagged off lemmy. What’s that quote about thinking you’re always surrounded by assholes?
