Or their phone keyboard offered an autocorrection… Google have been doing that for years now.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 33 points 2 weeks ago

So what you're saying is google knows how to spell Mia Khalifa's name. Does this mean they want my attention?

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 30 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

autocorrect capitalizes names, the name in the post isn't capitalized

[–] fartsparkles@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The could have auto capitalization turned off

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world -1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So then it wasn't auto corrected...

[–] fartsparkles@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Auto correct with autocapitalization turned off is a thing… I just tried it with my phone.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Lemme try. Miss Khalid

Nope, but that's 100% on me for swiping and sucking at it.

[–] fartsparkles@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel you and I ought to fight crime together or something.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm just a simple Fartographer; you're the one with all the pizzazz. If anything, I'd be the Peter Parker to your Spider-Man: two distinct individuals.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 91 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Or they could just know the correct spelling of a common Arabic name.

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world -5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You'd assume if it was someone you didn't know and someone else did, that they'd spell it right. So yeah, them correcting it means they looked it up or they're lying. Autocorrect isn't fixing that shit.

[–] treesapx@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Mine corrects it to Khalifa. What part of it being a common name is so difficult to understand?

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

I just posted somewhere else, if I try to write kalifa (like I just did, I had to force the incorrect spelling) my phone automatically autocorrects to Khalifa.

[–] cockmushroom@reddthat.com 28 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Tbf, you don't have to be a rainman of early 2010s porn to recognise poor transliteration arabic to english, but i'm sure it helps.

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 27 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

To be fair, if I swipe kalifa on my keyboard it autocorrects to Khalifa every time. There is no kalifa option other than the one I've just forced. If this person wasn't paying attention to the "h" it could've been accidental.

I hate modern Internet culture

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

They might be aware of the Burge Khalifa building

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No, I've never heard of the Burj Khalifa.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Or the rapper Wiz Khalifa for that matter. The song played at the end of fast 7 when they sent Paul Walker away (See you again) has billions of views on YouTube. In fact it's up to 7 billion now.

Incidentally that was the movie in which they jumped out of Burj Khalifa in cars lol

[–] msfroh@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I had read previously (and just confirmed on Wikipedia) that Mia Khalifa (real name Sarah Joe Chamoun) got her stage name from her dog, Mia, and Wiz Khalifa.

So, familiarity with Wiz Khalifa is directly relevant to knowing how Mia Khalifa's name is spelled.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Most awesome thing I've seen today edit: wait I hiked up a hill and looked at the city skyline today, nevermind

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 weeks ago

Or autocorrect or they read it and wrote it how it sounded to them without looking closely at spelling or many other possible reasons.

[–] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago

Ok but... who is Mia khalifa?

(I looked it up, I think it's former controversial porn actress, current internet personality)

[–] gilgameth@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They could've searched "Mia Kalifa" and found out the correct spelling. So it's not necessarily begging for attention.

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Then why would they ask who it is?

[–] Carnelian@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Gil already thought about this is and is just commenting for attention

[–] Hamartia@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Who's Gilgamesh broπŸ’”?

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Notice how his name is spelled gilgame-t-h here, and you spelled it right; shows that you know of him and you are simply begging for attention.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

What's "attention" and does it come in a caffeinated beverage form?

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Mine came with a deficit disorder

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

Notice how it's spelt "atenttion" here and you spelt it correct, showing you already have enough

[–] qualia@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Or they just know how to spell common surnames. Or they listen to rap. And only actually knows her after those two.

[–] gilgameth@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Goddammit, they're begging for attention!

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

your

I love when smug dickheads make 2nd grade grammar errors.

[–] leg@leminal.space 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm a smug dickhead, but usually when I make that mistake, it's because swype doesn't know which "your" I meant, and I fail to catch the mis-swype. Same with "too/to". And, weirdly, "me/Mr". It's actually a pretty common occurrence, and it's a huge pain point.

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Uff thats merciless

[–] lengau@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

Idk I just typed "kalifa" and had to fix autocorrect changing it to Khalifa. Or dude could be familiar with Arabic transliteration and the name but not the person.

Doesn't matter to me though. I'm distracted now that I'm thinking about Mia Khalifa.
