I thought lobo was the villain. Is lobo a sex trafficker in this movie?

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago

No. He is not the villain. He is just a bounty hunter.

BTW, I really liked Lobo in Man of Tomorrow, the animated film.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 3 points 2 hours ago

I guess I should watch this.

[–] ScriptSage@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 hours ago

I was loving this movie until it started being a superhero movie. It was a really cool scifi experience till then

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 8 points 4 hours ago

This type of movie is only a drag if you are a sex trafficker.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The dog sucked. I wish they used a real one. The cgi was just very rough, and I felt nothing for it all movie because of this fact.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

Very ruff you say?

[–] ProdigiousInsanity@lemmus.org 7 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Hmmm doggie? Which movie was this again? Asking for a friend

This meme is so confusing, do I read it top to bottom or bottom to top?

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 10 points 16 hours ago

Perfect movie.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 66 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

That's pretty much all a movie needs, really.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 63 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I'm a little more interested in it now TBH

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 hours ago

It was a weird one I thought. It has all the good elements I like - a sort of grungy vibe, ass-kicking woman protagonist, kill-all-sex-traffickers central theme - but somehow it was also kind of boring? I'm not entirely sure how they managed to pull that off TBH.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 19 points 22 hours ago

Good! If you're interested in the sort of story, it's a solid movie.

[–] red_tomato@lemmy.world 34 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

I think next DCU movie should just be Krypto. That’s Avatar levels of money.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Krypto is based on James Gunn's misbehaving dog

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Krypto killing sex traffickers

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 8 points 13 hours ago

As a side quest, Krypto can kill Sam Altman and Peter Thiel to help reign in crypto.

She is a complete narcissist in this movie. Has zero heroic attributes, has no kindness or compassion, completely self obsessed.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I don't think you understand what a narcissist is. And in the story, in literally every story about Supergirl, her family, her friends, everyone she ever knew, died horribly in front of her and she ends up surviving. There is such a thing as survivors guilt and it is pretty brutal.

But hey, feel free to be pissed that it isn't a clone of the Superman movie but with a girl.

[–] itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Wonder if people would have the same criticism if the character was a man instead lol

Men get so much more space to be antisocial than women do

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 7 hours ago

Yep. That's the point. She is just a person who lost her parents and home, and is trying to make sense of her life.

[–] Enzy@feddit.nu 5 points 6 hours ago

Yeah that's the whole point of her character

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 24 points 21 hours ago (4 children)

Except the dog was poisoned and sad. It wasn't "awww doggie" it was "awww sad doggie." Also Supergirl didn't have her powers for like 3/4ths of the movie (due to her character's own stupidity). Like they couldn't write a decent story if she had powers.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 hours ago

I think that's kind of the main issue with any character that has Superman-level powers, they're so OP that it sort of limits what you can do to keep the story interesting. You basically have:

  • Try to make the powers irrelevant and embroil them in a complicated psychological/moral issue (great if it works but difficult to pull off and not especially visually interesting for a superhero movie.)

  • Create an enemy with the same power level as them (then you just basically have two invincible characters bouncing off each other and smashing everything around them (visually interesting but essentially no stakes.)

  • Have them lose their powers in some convoluted way and then get them back at the climax of the movie to do an ass-kicking scene (which seems to be the default.)

I think it's the same problem that The Boys TV show had - at first there was kind of a tension about them just being normal people and Homelander being so powerful that he could hear their heartbeats from half a mile away and level the entire city they were hiding in if he knew they were there, but the longer it went on the more preposterous it got that he hadn't just squished them yet. Especially when the show has them meet face-to-face multiple times and he either lets them go because reasons or they escape somehow.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

and she recovered from the poison with yellow sun power, but the dog couldn't?

Maybe this would have been better written with ChapGPT.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (2 children)

I think the issue was more DC's power scaling issues. It's kinda hard to write a compelling story for Superman or Batman at their peak, because they are, for the most part, invincible and flawless according to DC. I suspect that her not having the ability to access her powers for 3/4 of the movie was an effort to make her seem like a Marvel superhero with flaws and relatability. Unfortunately, DC doesn't know how to do that, as Marvel doesn't even know how to do that consistently. Power creep is a real problem if you can't just magic away the hero's basic invulnerability.

This is one of the issues that Invincible tackled quite nicely at least until the end of season 2. I haven't gotten around to watching season 3.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 hours ago

It also kind of made the villains seem a bit daft. The rule seemed to be red sun = no powers, green sun = kills her, yellow sun = super powers and the main villain seemed to be pretty powerful no matter where he was, and they establish early on that there are lots of red sun planets where people live, so literally just hide out anywhere without a yellow sun and you're 100% safe?

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Couldn't get past season 1 of Invincible. You won't like what I thought about it. But I'm a Superman fan who doesn't like excessive violence, so hopefully you can understand where I'm coming from.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Nah, I get it. I wouldn't have gotten to season 2 if I had watched season 1 before season 2 was already out. Season 1 ended on the WORST POSSIBLE down note that they could, and I think they did that intentionally.

Minor spoilers: it's not like they ended season 2 on a good note, just that Nolan and Markus do finally find a common ground against Nolan's objectives.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (2 children)

It won't end in a satisfying way. They never do. Game of Thrones or The Boys or any violence-focused show. Terrible endings, all of them.

EDIT: Breaking Bad did okay by killing everyone, including an unrealistic machine gun in the trunk.

[–] Jacob_Mandarin@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Apparently the machine gun thing actually works. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=06t_KP7y8Ao

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Maybe, maybe not. The Boys was written from 2006-2012 in comicbook form, and they followed all storylines almost exactly as written. The ending of The Boys was predetermined because they were adapting an already written story that they didn't want to change.

Invincible was written over the timeframe of 2003-2014 in comicbook form. They have already ignored major plot points to make Invincible a bit more palatable to a wider audience. I suspect that they will end it in much the same way the original ended, with Nolan and Markus being the undisputed protectors of Earth, but not having any real power on Earth, via actual laws and standings.

23-year-old with abandonment and self-worth issues behaves less than reasonably, more at 11.

I like all that. Really liked what she did to that one jackass at the end--- made me like her a bit more.

Did not like dog being hurt, dog being left, dog almost dying. Did not like! 😭

Edit: omg I just realized why the Cons hated this movie! It's in the second line of the OP's post.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 12 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Her suit also included shorts under her skirt. SHORTS! Isn't that outrageous? How are they supposed to get pantyshots now?! /S

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago

Conservatives require cameltoe. Fucking disgusting, but entirely predictable behavior from the Epstien Class.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Meh... still not going to watch it

It was... fine. The action scenes were pretty dull, though. Seemed a strange choice for a second movie. If you're gonna have Supergirl as your second movie it really has to knock it out of the park. I mean guardians was after like 8 MCU movies or something.
