It's hero slop good guy beats bad guy

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

This type of movie is only a drag if you are a sex trafficker.

It was a total waste. Now we have 2 people from Krypton on Earth. The only two. I expected a story about Clark and his hot blonde cousin working hard to repopulate their species. They don't even talk about it!

Like... come on. We all want to have sex with our hottest cousin. We don't because stupid society says it's wrong. But if we were the only two humans left so suddenly banging our hot cousin was something we had to do for the survival of the human race? Fucking JACKPOT.

What kind of a weirdo totally ignores the story we all want to see? It writes itself.

Have you ever heard of projection?

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago

Umm... duh? I saw the movie in a theater. That's how they show them.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I can tell you never read the comics I did.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

I couldn't afford comics as a kid, my education comes entirely from alt.sex.stories.unmoderated.incest.

[–] ScriptSage@lemmy.zip 7 points 18 hours ago

I was loving this movie until it started being a superhero movie. It was a really cool scifi experience till then

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I thought lobo was the villain. Is lobo a sex trafficker in this movie?

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 16 hours ago

No. He is not the villain. He is just a bounty hunter.

BTW, I really liked Lobo in Man of Tomorrow, the animated film.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 4 points 18 hours ago

I guess I should watch this.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The dog sucked. I wish they used a real one. The cgi was just very rough, and I felt nothing for it all movie because of this fact.

Boo Go to your room and think of what you've done

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 74 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's pretty much all a movie needs, really.

[–] ButtDrugs@lemmy.zip 3 points 13 hours ago

Smells crime, back to the lab, full penetration. Crime, penetration, crime, full penetration, crime, penetration. And this goes on and on, and back and forth, for 90 or so minutes until the movie just, sort of, ends.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 68 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm a little more interested in it now TBH

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 4 points 18 hours ago

It was a weird one I thought. It has all the good elements I like - a sort of grungy vibe, ass-kicking woman protagonist, kill-all-sex-traffickers central theme - but somehow it was also kind of boring? I'm not entirely sure how they managed to pull that off TBH.

Lassie Has a Psychotic Reaction to Krokodil

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This meme is so confusing, do I read it top to bottom or bottom to top?

[–] red_tomato@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I think next DCU movie should just be Krypto. That’s Avatar levels of money.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Krypto is based on James Gunn's misbehaving dog

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Krypto killing sex traffickers

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As a side quest, Krypto can kill Sam Altman and Peter Thiel to help reign in crypto.

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 hours ago

I mean, that's kind of what they did in Superman, and it was very cathartic

Except the dog was poisoned and sad. It wasn't "awww doggie" it was "awww sad doggie." Also Supergirl didn't have her powers for like 3/4ths of the movie (due to her character's own stupidity). Like they couldn't write a decent story if she had powers.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

and she recovered from the poison with yellow sun power, but the dog couldn't?

Maybe this would have been better written with ChapGPT.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yes! That was plot hole that frustrated me early on.

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

They said that moving Krypto would accelerate the poison so he would have died before they got to a yellow sun.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah that's pretty nonsense though. Superman can literally die for days/weeks and come back to life with the sun's power. Krypto should be able to also.

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 12 hours ago

It's not a great excuse, no, but the lampshade was at least present.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I think that's kind of the main issue with any character that has Superman-level powers, they're so OP that it sort of limits what you can do to keep the story interesting. You basically have:

  • Try to make the powers irrelevant and embroil them in a complicated psychological/moral issue (great if it works but difficult to pull off and not especially visually interesting for a superhero movie.)

  • Create an enemy with the same power level as them (then you just basically have two invincible characters bouncing off each other and smashing everything around them (visually interesting but essentially no stakes.)

  • Have them lose their powers in some convoluted way and then get them back at the climax of the movie to do an ass-kicking scene (which seems to be the default.)

I think it's the same problem that The Boys TV show had - at first there was kind of a tension about them just being normal people and Homelander being so powerful that he could hear their heartbeats from half a mile away and level the entire city they were hiding in if he knew they were there, but the longer it went on the more preposterous it got that he hadn't just squished them yet. Especially when the show has them meet face-to-face multiple times and he either lets them go because reasons or they escape somehow.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I don't think that's true at all, and there are nearly 100 years of Superman comics full of stuff that doesn't fit that. I feel like you are commenting on the movies specifically and coming to the conclusion that these are the ONLY choices.

When they make a movie, they are OBSESSED with the 2nd idea. An enemy with equal power. Which is why we've seen 2 movies starring general Zod, despite him not being that major of a character. It's why we got Doomsday in the Justice League movie. Hollywood filmmakers are clearly in love with the idea of two super people bouncing off buildings for 90 minutes. In the comics though, this would be boring as hell. "Essentially no stakes" as you put it. Correct. It's boring. I hate that the movies always want Superman to become this. Because it's not what the comics are like at all.

There are many options you have missed. There are limits to Superman's powers. Remember that these are from detective comics. A good Superman comic involves a mystery for Clark Kent/Superman to solve. Like who is supplying Intergang with weapons. A good episode from the kids cartoon show starts with Clark Kent being assassinated, then Superman trying to figure out who did it and why. Superman Red Son (which has a cartoon movie with some changes), puts Superman in the USSR instead of Kansas, for truth, justice, and the communist way. Again, not remotely any of the 3 plot lines you have suggested.

Superman (2025) did a great job with this. Yes you've got an "equal" super-being for him to fight (Hollywood wouldn't accept anything less), but ultimately it's about Lex Luthor and the plot behind it all.

The Boys is a poorly written show that loves violence. They ran out of ideas within a couple years. Not surprised at all that everyone hated the ending. They wrote themselves into a corner very early on. They were always pushing the idea that violence was the answer, very unlike Superman in nearly every way. The fact that you see this as comparable to Superman is pretty frustrating. Frankly I think the whole show is a bit of a middle finger to Superman. It's literally a show about how much they think Superman sucks. The show that's about Superman sucking, isn't a satisfying portrayal of Superman? Shocker.

Like... "Superman" is Clark Kent. A reporter who discovers crime, then he also has the powers to stop it. But the "Superman" you describe is a super-being who is boring when he bounces off buildings, always being power scaled or losing his powers so that the fights will be interesting for Hollywood. Do you see the difference?
