I can't get into twitter/bluesky/mastodon. I don't like following specific users and I don't like the format 🤷🏽‍♂️I always end up following someone who then overwhelm whatever feed I have then libs out. I just pop into reddit/lemmy and post whatever shows up and in my inbox then bounce, the maintenance on microblogging is exhausting to me

This has been my major issue with non-algorithmic feeds. There's always that pareto superminority who are responsible for the supermajority of what I see on my feed, and no real way to float up some posts from less prolific accounts.

I use Mastodon if I want to follow specific users but that's it.

I like to check in on the feeds from time to time but I never really clicked with the yelling into the void style of posting. Replying to people is also not always welcome (the contempt some people have for reply guys).

I really much prefer forum threads where you just stick to one topic at a time.

I just use browser bookmarks of userpages on xcancel etc. if I want to see what they're up to. I don't have or want accounts on those sites.

its an absurd format. it's not for conversation or information. just short format broadcast, so it's full of popularity contest obsessed bozos and "entrepenurial" grifters doing ads.

if it and all its clones were nuked, it would have no negative effect on any future aearch for resources, information, or culturally significant expression. when's the last time you found the answer to a query hosted on twitter? reddit blows but i still find valuable shit buried in some community.

that absolutely never happens with twitter

Yeah the lopsided posting habits of various users makes it hard to see all the posts from people you follow. There's always that one account posting 10 times an hour flooding out your feed.

This combined with not being able to filter out retweets makes Mastodon cumbersome and not very effective for its main purpose...keeping up with posts from specific people.

Say what you will about recommendation algorithms, they do at least prevent this type of thing from ruining your experience.

the radlibs on bsky got mad when I said Solzhenitsyn was a fascist sympathizer who complained the US didn't go far enough in Vietnam

Me watching bluesky unfold the way I called as soon as it came into existence: this-is-fine

Death to all twitters

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I can't even imagine the type of person who actually uses bluesky

Bluesky becoming an everything app before X would be pretty funny

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

never understood why we need 2 twitters

"why would a large number of a social media's userbase jump ship when famous shitty guy, Elon Musk, bought it??????" - you rn

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

isn't it owned by some taiwanese fascist instead? really owning me w/ that i guess

edit: idk who the fuck I'm thinking of because google is insisting there's no taiwanese people involved with it. it's still a liberal shithole idk why we needed 2 of them

[–] abc@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean a lot of the 'I'm holier than twitter/bluesky' opinions I see seem to focus on how 'awful' they are but conveniently leave out that Twitter up until Musk bought it was the place for getting breaking news for over a decade. I don't think it is hard to conceive as to why people would've wanted to jump ship when Elon started rolling out things like grok. To call Twitter a liberal shithole in 2026 is kinda crazy anyways given that it is most definitely a 'fascist shithole' and has been for sometime with the whole 'grok generate an image of this user naked'

You could very well say the same thing about reddit/lemmy - why do we need two reddits when lemmy as a whole is a liberal shithole as well??? bleh

But lemmy has hexbear

also i was calling bluesky a liberal shithole but it's really a same-picture situation

[–] abc@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

But lemmy has hexbear

...Hexbear is famously run by a liberal clique of power users who want nothing more than to get Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez elected as the 48th President of the United States

[–] Sleve_McDichael@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’d like to make one clarification. Hexbear is full of liberals, except for me, I’m the one true leftist on the site

[–] abc@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

oh yeah?? name 3 leftist movies

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

as much as i've had occasional problems with hexbear administration idk I fully trust y'all only to support such an outcome out of sheer terminal irony poisoning

also I had to google like, who is the 47th, and idk IMO they shouldn't count dudes twice just because their terms are out of order, they're just juicing their president count

you should never trust a moderator or administrator of any platform, they will always let you down dean-smile

Its a con. Liberals got mad at twitter and instead of going to anything else they went to bluesky because they bought into the idea that it is some mythical twitter that didn't have algorithm and wasn't owned by bad conservates. It would be "federated' " eventually " along with a bunch of other promises.

They literally went to it because musk bad and this new thing looks and acts like twitter. Couldn't get anyone to anything else to save my life (was a social media manager) and I just kept getting these bullshit excuses and it always boiled down to the same shit.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

You mean the social media system designed to be just like twitter except with even worse engagement with other users isn't retaining active users?

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Idk I just don't like the app itself. It's slow af.

[–] erik@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Crazy that Threads still does so well in so many metrics considering its place in popular culture is almost nothing. Bluesky, for as small as it is and apparently struggling, still gets a fair amount of play thanks to a handful of power-users and what not.

I've no dog in this race; I'm a Mastodon dead-ender. But it's more my methadone after I left Twitter than anything else. I've got some friends on Bluesky willing to ignore its connections to crypto and Bain Capital and what not because some of their favorite YouTubers or whatever are on there.

The Instagram app heavily pushes Threads right on the main feed.
