"Win back the working class".

The Ds and Rs have been working against the working class for about 70 years.

Yes, I know the Ds provide more lip service... but the numbers don't lie. Pay is down, life expectancy is down, everything is down but corporate profits.

Unions were almost 50% of the workforce back in the 50s, now they are down to less than 10%, and most of that is government employees.

Even Poland now has better worker benefits than the USA, maternity leave, vacation, and other benefits Americans can only dream of. We have been surpassed by Eastern Europe.

It sure would be nice to have a labor party in the USA. You can't win back the working class by actively fucking them over for generations.

I think campaign consultants are the root of this problem, at least in the Democratic party. When you have a campaign run like El Sayed's, where no corporate or PAC money is accepted, then you need to knock on doors, and talk to people. Traditional campaigns pay millions to the consultants who then spend your war chest on legacy media ad buys, which they get a commission on.

This is one major reason why El Sayed, Mamdani, et al, are such a threat to both parties and also why legacy media has targeted Hasan Piker. They are just as effective, if not more effective, without giving special interests(capital) power over them.

We're not in a left/right struggle as much as a top/bottom struggle.

The Ds and Rs have been working against the working class for about 70 years.

FDR was the compromise not the solution. We got improvements under penalty of revolution and that's only been eroded since.

Sadly most in the usa have been convinced/conditioned to think what was extremely hard won is fair to throw away in return for the possibility of small wealth increases, with the almost everything else getting worse

If we're to fix this, they both gotta go

[–] OnyxRex@lemmy.dbzer0.com 92 points 3 days ago (10 children)

When Biden sided with the railroads I lost the last shred of hope I had for the party.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 82 points 3 days ago (26 children)

Mines been gone ever since what they did to fuck over Bernie from receiving the nomination.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Yeah, both the DNC, and Elizabeth Warren did this.

I wasn't a fan myself. I resented the hell out of him for entering the race in 2020 and outing Bernie. I don't like to talk about it much because it makes me seem like a Bernie bro but as far as I'm concerned the democratic establishment did everything they could to keep a socialist out of the whitehouse. The entire primary was political theater to dilute the socialist agenda and Biden only entered the race when it was clear that, even with his base split between him and warren, nothing was going to stop Sanders.

BUT, as someone who spent time in the trade unions I swallowed my pride and voted for Biden. I didn't expect much, but I did expect a damn democrat to do what they always say they would do and support the union block.

2020 was the moment. It was the last time I actually thought we could turn things around. Ever since that primary I've just been waiting for us to go the way of the USSR.

I remember that. I never liked him (but voted for him over the pedophile rapist, Donald Trump), but at that point I really started to think he was an actual piece of shit.

Actions shout down words. They're not going to win back working men until they have supported them consistently for a generation. So, not for at least a couple of generations.

[–] SaltyAmerican@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It took 34 years to get to this point, it will take a few generations, if they are even around, to win back trust. My money is on them being the dominant openly right wing party before then

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 24 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Fuck the GOP for sure but it's hard to still believe in a two-party system without seeing both parties as eerily similar.

[–] Gaslov@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Both parties are charged with keeping their 330 million people maximally productive. The US isn't the richest country in the world without reason.

The country is rich, the people aren't.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago

To be fair, the US isn't rich so much because of its own productivity, but through being the world's largest empire, plundering from the global south.

Look kiddo, the adults in the room know that if you keep voting for the lesser of two evils, they'll eventually feel guilty and give you some candy. It's called Democracy: look it up.

[–] tyo_ukko@sopuli.xyz 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Either you solve the problems of the working people, or you blame it all on immigrants and minorities.

Only one of these approaches is consistent with what the oligarchs want.

[–] hypeerror@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Any scapegoat plays. When I was a kid Reagan blamed black women.

"I dont know what to do, i dont know how to reach out to these good men and women to communicate with and to share our values"

"have you tried talking to them? Listening to their needs?"

"What? Why the fuck would I lower my self to the peasantry. They just need to do what they're told and like it.. now how do we make them understand this"

[–] SaltyAmerican@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

What? Why the fuck would I lower my self to the peasantry.

Makes me think of Hillary in 2016

Fellow Democrats...

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (4 children)

The thing about democrats is they always try to walk it in

The inherent problem with the DNC is that rank in the party is designated by seniority, and all the current senior members came into power when Third Way politics became popularized.

Third way politics is the actual non conspiracy reason you should hate the Clintons. They popularized it in America as a way to get past the gridlock of Congress that started in the early 90s. Basically they would work with "centrist" politicians on the other side of the aisle on any policy that both parties could agree with. This decongested the grid lock and "proved" that Democrats could be trusted to navigate the center path.

In reality it ceded control over what policy made up the middle ground over to Republicans, who took the opportunity to drag the DNC further and further right. So now we have a "leftist" political party that has been trained for the last 30 years to reflexively make concessions at the whim of the increasingly fascist right.

looks at my state well, I would vote for a socialist if I had one... :( I'll still vote though, regardless.

[–] No_Ones_Slick_Like_Gaston@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Coming from the polls on MDC today I can tell D voters registered and living in the 305 just didn't show up. This is why we can't have nice things.

People who see enough “real” lose their ability to consume or be influenced by bullshit. You’ll see this in healthcare among experienced staff. People are often their authentic selves, for better or worse, when ill or in pain. More so, with staff members who spend the most time dealing directly with the people.

What happens is healthcare management loses their ability to bullshit or talk sideways to staff to placate them.

I feel like the people as a whole are becoming like that now. (Finally). In response to political spin. The “muzzle velocity” approach to news has accelerated that progression. People are generally done with bullshit and talking sideways from their politicians.

What will happen if democrats try anything less than authenticity, is they will likely cease to exist as a party. The “vote against” momentum is already dying.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 41 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I actually think Mamdani has helped accelerate this as well, proving that it’s possible to just do things citizens want by you know, doing them them takes so much air out of bought and paid for career politicians

It’s obviously not all him, but I do think the visibility and his overall authenticity is changing hearts and minds

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Mamdani showed everyone that the Orphan Crushing Machine has an off switch & that the neolibs just had no interest in using it.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 26 points 3 days ago (4 children)

And he balanced the budget. Republicans do the opposite now when balancing the budget used to be their political war cry. And he did it right away, didn’t take long.

And he does it fast too. Potholes get fixed within the week when residents alert the city about them. It completely undermines the narrative that government has to be so slow and useless at getting things done. That's a serious threat to politicians who now can't sit around doing nothing without the public asking why they can't do what Mamdani does. Even moreso that it's a socialist getting things done, something Americans have been so thoroughly trained to treat as a scary boogeyman until now.
