Fun fact:

Snake venoms are generally classified into four main functional types: neurotoxic (attacking the nervous system), hemotoxic (disrupting blood clotting and destroying red blood cells), cytotoxic (destroying local cells and tissues), and myotoxic (causing rapid muscle breakdown).

Try here.

@anon6789@lemmy.world's been doing a killer job with it. 🙂

I love my slithery friends! Met a chonky python at the zoo yesterday and got to give him pets. Even came home at night to a wiggly garter snake on the welcome mat. Glad I saw him in the shadows, I'd have felt terrible if I hurt it.

I'd be happy to include some more snakes. They could always use positive coverage.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Sounds good!

One thing I get a certain naughty kick out of is the way domestic cats (originally African wildcats) startle so easily when they see snake-like objects in the area. Makes perfect sense to me, though, as they'd be natural prey to various snakes across the greater range of their habitats.

OTOH, on our end, we seem to be unusually scared of some animals, such as spiders, even though spiders for the most part are natural allies, especially in our homes. We so silly...

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Those poor cats get spooked by those cucumbers... 😂

The wife and I have reached a peace deal with spiders. She knows I leave them in the house, I just need to make sure she doesn't see them.

My coworker and I have both been ensuring spiders get moved out of high human traffic areas.

First thing I noticed was the cactus that is wanking one out behind the bushes there

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago

I absolutely cannot explain why, but at first glance I keep seeing an elephant.

[–] PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 7 points 2 months ago

Something's living in that hole, isn't it?

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 68 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I would not have seen that, before it was to late.

[–] colourlesspony@pawb.social 50 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They would probably rattle before you too got close.

Wear tall boots if you're hiking in rattlesnake territory

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

that's when they go for the balls

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 19 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Tall boots and a cod piece it is then.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Just tall boots and a codpiece, if you’re feeling confident

It never ceases to amaze me how little survival instinct many people have these days. Like you ride on your bike with your headphones on and your eyes on your phone and delegate all responsibility for keeping you alive to other people.

[–] mkhopper@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I have the same opinion.
I think that as a society, we have become far too dependent on having something playing in our ears at all times, almost as if we're afraid of being with our own thoughts.

When I am out walking, it's just me and the sounds of whatever is happening around me. Don't just hear, but listen to the birds, distant vehicles, a dog barking, wind in the trees, and in this case, a rattlesnake looking for something to nibble on.

This is where the phrase “If it had been a snake, it would have bit me.” comes from.

You have to respect that rattlesnake warn you before biting. It’s very polite.

I have one or two of these come to hang out near my house each year so I just load them into a garbage can and take them to the north forty so they don't bite my dogs.

Hey look at me, im a rattle snake! I camouflage well info my environment then wait till you get close to loudly announce my presence like some sort of joke. GREETINGS!

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

Oh. I thought you were talking about the masturbating cactus.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I was watching a nature documentary last week. Rattlesnakes are some kinky motherfuckers. When the male approached the female to mate, the first thing she did was smack his head around with her tail. Then when it was time for copulation, she wrapped her tail around the male's penis and dragged him by it to their mating spot.

I once dated a guy who was an extreme sub, who really wanted me to put him in a dog cage while I went off to work (I didn't do it, I wasn't ready for that level of kink at the time.) I think he would've been down for a rattlesnake-style mating ritual.

Regular snakes are pretty dope too, but enjoy the lifestyle.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

Rattlers are adorable and I refuse to think differently. Their little angry snoots and tail wiggles. Maraca butts!

I hate it when cacti suddenly jack off at me

If I hadn't somehow clicked right on it when enlarging the pic, I never would have seen it.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Wow, you live somewhere that looks cool as fuck from inner city England. Should probably wear high boots when you're out for a walk tho. Safe and sexy.

[–] arotrios@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (3 children)

We had a real problem with the babies around the house when I was a kid - they often don't have enough of a rattle grown yet to alert you.

It's one of the reasons that now, I leave some tidbits out for the local family of possum - they come by each night. They love to munch on small snakes, and are immune to most snake venom. Plus they eat mice and rats as well:
