This is why I stay on the walking paths in my neighborhood. They're supposed to be here in NM, too, but I've never seen one where I live. I don't want to meet one. Where I am it's sagebrush and sand, maybe they're closer to the mountain where the ground rocky like in this picture.

Well if he didn't want to get stepped on, he shouldn't have been looking so much like a rock while hanging out among all those other rocks!
That looks like West Tucson!
Yep, I got out at 4:30 this morning to the El Camino del Cerro Trailhead before it got hot.

Even after seeing the zoom in crop I couldn't spot snek in the full photo for a minute.
I had to find the parallelogram rock first

If it was a snake, it would have bit you
I've heard them but never seen any on a trail. When I was a boy, my friends and I found a nest with a whole bunch of babies. We watched them for a bit but stayed far enough away. Thankfully we didn't seem to excite them
Never ran into one in Phoenix but in Tucson, we ran into a green one on the way up Mount Lemmon. Beautiful but frightening.
Badger badger badger badger, mushroom mushroom! badger badger badger badger AH! Snake! Snake! Snake! Ooooh, it's a snake!
'Sup. Got mouse?'
I'm pretty sure I would have died. It took me way too long to spot it.
I guess IRL the sound would've helped.
