I'm still playing Rimworld

Regardless, I never spend more than $20 on a game, wait for the "Game of the Year Platinum Super Edition" to go on sale. It works every time!

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 3 points 20 hours ago

Isn't each rimworld DLC more than 20USD? Though I play it enough to easily be worth it.

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 20 points 1 day ago

Same. Got the base Cyberpunk 2077 game for $18. And then got the dlc for $18. Best $36 I've spent on a game in a long time.

All hail the ability to emulate console games up to a certain generation well enough on even lower end hardware.

Ain't no other way to officially enjoy classics like Tony Hawk Pro Skater ( best on Dreamcast IMO ). Probably one of the greatest skater games, just behind a game like Skate 2. But maybe that's the nostalgia talking...

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What about playing them on the original consoles? I've got a Game Cube and PS3 I still use occasionally, and a PS2 that I haven't tried in a long time but would give it 50/50 for just booting up if I hooked it up, plus some portion of the failure 50% includes the possibility of repairing it.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Original console, in most cases, is probably gonna be the better option IMO. But due to the rising cost of everything, games/consoles included, emulation is better from a purely price saving standpoint. I am lucky enough to have so many consoles, but I still emulate or use console softmods because I can't afford every game I want.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I also love how emulators make 40 year old games much more playable with features like state save.

I remember spending hours watching my friends play that game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is 6 years old. May pirate and try out before realizing my pc can't run it.

I love that he says "splendid" in response to his own point

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 7 points 21 hours ago

That's honestly my favorite part of this template

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 points 20 hours ago

I like how they both say it at the same time

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Skyrim, Fallout NV, Diablo II, modded to fuck Dungeon Keeper, Age Of Empires II, so many more. I’m set for life

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 48 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Modded to What?

Sounds dope, though. Enjoy your peace, king

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I know nothing of the Diablo 2 modding scene but there better be a sex mod.

How do you mod dungeon keeper

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

KeeperFX is a modern port of the game that makes it run on modern pcs. It needs the base game of course but it comes with mod support so after you install keeperfx, mods are basically plug&play

Morrowind, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Saints Row 2, GTA San Andreas, Ultima, beside few indies, Pragmata and Fallout, this and retro console games are my main playthroughs

[–] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fallout New Vegas

You had me worried. Surely Fallout New Vegas isn't a 20 year old game? But no, it only came out 16 years ago. Crisis averted.

[–] NOPper@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Good news! Bethesda is surely about to release a patch that fixes nothing you need and breaks all your mods, just like Skyrim the other day again!

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I got annoyed with Skyrim on ps3 because of annoying save/load times and broken quests that I couldn’t patch or fix.

If I try Fallout NV on ps3 will I have a better time?

[–] tio_bira@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Well, thank God than my copy is from GoG and only update if i choose it

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago

Still got Dosbox and a bunch of classics like Wing Commander, The Incredible Machine and Space/King's Quest.

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I got a XP PC for playing Sims 2 and 3, especially 3 is such a mess that it don't really work on anything else, even if it kinda runs.. Also some Lego games and such I used to play as a kid. Well, anything XP era runs, obviously. Just stick/disc it in.

Now I have been cleaning my PS3 (stolen from an ex, added in a bigger SSD) and buying some used games on it from trift stores, for about 2-3€ a piece.. Looking forward for playing that new (for me) GTA! (IV) We also have like.. two PS1s and at least two PS2s. I also still have my PS4, but gonna sell that once I get around. I need money for my offline Linux PC project.. Chose a case that requires a single-slot GPU, send prayers and so on.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

especially 3 is such a mess that it don't really work on anything else

It does work wonders on Proton.

[–] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 1 points 20 hours ago

Interesting! I'm beginner with Linux and haven't really touched or looked into Protons and Vines and those things, but very interesting! On Win10 or Win11 it's not great at all, but Win7 was still alright.. Even when that PC obviously had less of everything.

[–] missingno@fedia.io 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Retro game prices have been skyrocketing too. Everything's kinda fucked.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 day ago

Just soft mod your console or get a flash cart and sail the high seas.

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 11 points 1 day ago

Dwarf fortress is around 20 years old so that checks

Any old mmo enjoyers with a game with an active community to link a fella? Was a fiend for RF online back in the day it was sci-fantasy before I knew what sci fantasy was haha!

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Clan Lord

I played it during the beta way back in ‘97(?) but couldn’t continue when it went to a monthly subscription due to being a teen. I found out it was still going 3 years ago and became re-addicted.

Now a character is $15USD and no money is asked for after that. No micro-transactions or nuthin’.

The graphics maintain the ‘97 2D top-down style with chat bubbles, but the game still gets monthly updates.

You can log in for free but no progress will be saved and you don’t get to choose your name or anything cool.

The community is super friendly and helpful and some players have been playing since the start. It’s deceptively deep and there’s wikis to help you figure out what’s going on, but I don’t want to overload you with links right now.

There’s a discord too, but I’d rather you ask for it in-game to avoid and non-clanners causing trouble

TrackMania United quite literally Forever Kinda wish there would be some effort for a de compilation or custom engine for linux but for that its probably too modern to be feasible.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

UT2004 still bops. If I suddenly stopped being able to buy new games, that one would keep me entertained for at least another decade.

[–] Syndication@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

That's me except with UT 1999! As long as the community servers are still there, I'm good.

I just spent the summer playing all of the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Castlevania games. The series had its ups and downs, but the games are still fun. I think the DS titles still hold up very well.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I’m playing Goldeneye on N64

[–] barooboodoo@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Have you heard of agent 64: spies never die? I'm curious if anyone around here has played it and what their impressions are.

Even if it's just 10-15, Zomboid, Oxygen Not Included, Factorio, Isaac, and Risk of Rain, are thousands of possible fun hours, even without rotation

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 2 points 20 hours ago

Most of my games are from the 2010s, don't really need to get a better GPU. Factorio megafactories will probably always enjoy faster CPUs though.
