If you want to read a Canadian perspective on this, CBC has an article on this exact thing.

Let The Fun Begin! - Critical Minerals/NOPE - More Hydro Electric Energy/NOPE - Canadians Drinking American Booze/NOPE - Canadians Deciding To Visit The States In Big Numbers Like They Used To Before/NOPE - It's high time that our Canadian government, and all Canadians stand unwaveringly strong on this never ending train of ridiculous tariffs! ✅

Matching "dollar for dollar" is dumb. We have to do things that hurt us little while maximizing their squeal.

Digital Services Tax needs to go in immediately. Tax exports of electricity and fuel. Lift trademark and patent restrictions. Repeal or amend the Copyright Modernization Act to eliminate DMCA style fuckery.

We can hurt them while benefiting from removing their shitty policies forced on us.

We should not try to fight toe to toe.

For every $1 we get, they get $10.

Two fucking idiots posturing.

Canada owns near to half a trillion dollars in US bonds. Wonder what would happen if that was sold all at once?

We just saw the US bail out Japan (which owns about 1.2 trillion) to avoid Japan selling those bonds to bail themselves out. Really stupid of them to do that and then the next week play hard ball on another country that owns sizable chunk of US debt.

Wonder what would happen if that was sold all at once?

Canada would take a massive loss on the sale while the private markets and the Federal Reserve casually absorbs the influx of new notes at a discount.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

It would definitely be dumb to let them go all at once. You'd want to dovest carefully. Or do some bond swaps, perhaps. Exchange some for euros or yuan.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm not talking about US dollars, I'm talking about bonds.

We need to do like Europe and get our government administration off of US tech companies

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Fuck the States. Sell them no minerals. Buy no products.

Canada and the US engage in bilateral trade across the supply chain. And they are on generally good terms with the northern liberal neighbor states.

Canadians would be better off working with their US neighbors to evade tariff collections than increasingly the policing on people who share a broad class interest

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago

Fuck America. I'd chew off my own arm to deny them the meat.

Despite the US offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market. new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days," he said, "This is a missed opportunity for Canada to partner with the United States, which is the fastest growing economy in the G7," the USTR added further

yeah, I don't care. you don't settle for a weekend of preferential treatment by an abusive partner

This trade deal thing was always kind of a wishy-washy. On one hand we don't want people to lose their jobs and face economic hardship. On the other hand we don't want to give in to the US. Americans think it's about Trump, but we know that while some of his tariffs would be dropped by another President, not all of them will be. This is how it's always been with trading with the US. Trump is more extreme than most Presidents, but Americans in general don't deal with us honestly.

This is going to be rough. People lose their jobs on both sides of the border. But at least now there's clarity. No more maybe we should make a deal maybe we shouldn't. Now there's only: Let's fucking go!

Fuck Trump. FUCK THE US.

Canadian dollar to US dollar, seems good.

Besides, standing up to him is the only way to deal with TACO.

Spit in his face and wait 'til Tuesday.

[–] jobbies@lemmy.zip 43 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Good for Carney. I wish more world leaders would stand up for themselves.

So is Trump empty, filling, or sitting in a full diaper? In this photo, my money is on filling.

[–] stumu415@lemmy.zip 99 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

"Last-minute changes in the US proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal."

That is how trustworthy the US is. Even if they would sign a trade deal, it would not be worth the paper it was signed on.

Let the world move on without the US.
