Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1860 readers
38 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

I'm guessing that I was banned for recent, scientifically accurate statements about "AI" despite a long history of posting in the comm. As someone who doesn't believe in "AI", I think that a great portion of "anti-AI" sentiment is misguided at best and most often feeding the grift. I think it's really sad how people who supposed oppose "AI" constantly feed the hype through anthropomorphism, absurd claims/beliefs, etc. Perhaps more importantly, if you're more upset by people generated images of witches than by genocide, surveillance, etc., then you're part of the problem. TBH technology is always corrupted by capitalism and nothing special is really happening with "AI" apart from the massive grift. The comm seems like a lib space mostly for promoting phony "AI" press releases. I'm not surprised that I was banned for my thought crimes. "AI" doesn't exist and I'm not sorry about it. But that comm is the real booster. Rife with pseudo-science and anthropomorphism. That's why liberal resistance is not actually resistance. These people are going to be crying about witch pictures while being dragged off to prison during an "AI" raid...

Kind of surprised they didn't ban me from that community as retaliation since I banned all their mods for coming to my comms to downvote every new post as they came out. Maybe if they figured out how to do it with Tesseract or Photon they would. I have no intention of ever posting there since their members have harassed me aggressively and even impersonated me.

You got banned because you posted in a completely different community? Did you get banned from Fuck_AI after posting there afterwards, or just randomly?

It's one of those circlejerk communities. Both PTB because it is, and sort of YDI because of you go against the jerk you can't really expect anything else. Same as with the linuxsucks guy.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Its big enough to top feeds though, where linuxsucks only rarely scrolls by on /new.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 21 hours ago

Yeah, well, that's what happens when you use those feeds. You browse unfiltered, you get unfiltered. It's like drinking from a river, enough people shit in it and you'll always have turds floating by. That's why I only use the subscribed feed. I still get turds, but at least they're predictable.

10,000%. I even brought that up in the recent thread about anarchists & LLMs.

"AI" doesn't exist and I'm not sorry about it.

Just want to note - it does, and has for about 70 years. Its a big umbrella, and I think what you're saying here is General AI (or AGI Artificial General Intelligence) doesn't exist. It doesn't. But NAI (narrow) does exist, thats what LLMs are.

It gets messier because of those marketing pieces they put out because they will refer to Gen AI (and mean generative) or they try and rebrand General as "able to do a task that a person did" which is remarkably silly and pure nonsense.

As far as the community goes, I mostly gloss over it for the reasons you mention. Its like a little bit of fabricated reality in there. And due to that, I'd say PTB.

That said, its one of those places where disagreement isn't generally welcome, so it shouldn't be surprising.

PTB - but even though I agree with your central take, I don't agree for the same reason. AI is here to stay - it's too powerful a tool for control to go anywhere.

That’s why liberal resistance is not actually resistance.

There is no such thing as "liberal resistance" - there is only liberal counterinsurgency.

I'm with you 100% here.

But... I think the rest of the post is overgeneralized and kinda went off the rails.

Corporate "AI" is awful. Its a huge issue, its reasonable to be upset about it, and its not reasonable to expect people to understand technical nuance amongst models they never use.

Ive been anti-anti-AI in that community, and havent gotten banned yet... And I think being polite goes a long way, there.

Agreed, it's never not okay to hate corporate AI and the companies who lease it to us over the air.

Shameless plug for !fuck_corporate_ai@lemmy.dbzer0.com for people who actually want to post about these issues and not just blindly circlejerk against AI in general.
