I was a reddit user for, idk, 13 years? I forget. Came here in 2023 because of the API shenanigans. The official reddit app sucked then and still sucks today. I open reddit maybe once a year, sigh, and close it again.

Lemmy has become so much better since joining, as far as apps go. Glad I left.

By the end of the day reddit is feudal property and the asshole can kick out anyone anytime, as he uses the data for, of course, AI mining.

Because Reddit got exactly what they wanted. Smaller subs, including my own, died. Larger subs had their mod teams replaced with Reddit employees or volunteers who follow blindly for free. The only people left on Reddit are bots, ignorant users, new users who don't know the difference, and the losers that agree with what the corpo bullshit did despite it making their experience noticeably worse.

One thing that happened is that I left and have never returned!

I officially as of this week can proudly say I have completely quit using Reddit altogether! No business advertising dollars, no personal account anymore.

One thing you didn't mention is a lot of mods didn't capitulate and were removed from power and banned.

I never gave in, FWIW. The two tiny subs I created, I locked them. When every other sub started reopening or being forced open by admins, I just left Reddit altogether and never went back.

It's not the first community I've abandoned in protest, GameFAQs back in 200? And Imgur in 201? I had long term accounts on both of those and just permanently walked away from them when the community went to shit. Before then, there were a bunch of forums I used to frequent that also went to shit with infighting and draconian moderation.

It's the circle of life in the internet. It happens in every community.

I fuck ton of technical individuals deleted their entire post history.

I've deleted my several times until they stayed gone.

The CEO did win to an extent, but the entire site became less useful and more toxic.

At the time I deleted all my posts, quit reddit and came here. After a while I went back to reddit (mostly to my country's sub) and I noticed a huge difference. It became a lot less organic, bot traffic increased and the content seemed mostly reposts and rage bait. It was a huge change. I truly believe it was a major blow to reddit and the beggining of the end, even if it's not immediately obvious. But I believe in time we will see the API fiasco as the first major exodus.

Lemmy then was a ghost town. In a few minutes you could scroll all the content for the day. But it started growing, and with each major scandal the traffic increased until now, where its potential as competition is starting to become apparent.

It was not for nothing, AT ALL. We won big time, they just masked it for whoever wasn't watching carefully

I had over 14 years on Reddit before the API bullshit, and I haven't been back since. I only see reddit content filtered through the occasional Kagi summery. Fuck Reddit.

Lately my 70yo mother has been sending me links from there instead of Facebook, so that's an interesting development.

As soon as reddit is fun stopped working I left reddit, the only reddit is good for now is weird porn.

Some subs went dark and never came back. Some went dark, came back only because Reddit appointed new mods and removed the old ones. There was a big shift in the top 25 or so most popular subs around that time. Total number of upvotes on the top posts also started trending downward around that time, not that I have any evidence that is a result of lowered traffic.

My protest was to leave and never return. I have been on Lemmy since that week.

If they did it again we'd win. Second wave will kill it I think.

Most of the reasons people didn't stick around are technical, there are some social reasons but they'd rapidly get drowned out by the incoming wave or find nice instances that respect their... values.

The reddit feed is its biggest strength. It's addictive for the general public. Lemmy feed is not that addictive or maybe there are more people like me who don't know how to properly customize it.

It was done in a very "reddit" brained way. The protest got over, everyone moved back to reddit.

I used to mod a few communities which I closed back then. They were all renamed to a random string, leaving the subreddit name to be used by someone else. r/HytaleScripting
