A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.

- Posts must be original/unique

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I see this all the time. How can there be privacy when my phone is a peep show?
Companies value your privacy in the same way weird people value virginity.
Funny enough it almost never means they care.
Oh they do care. Just not in a way you'd appreciate.
They care about the money advertisers pay for the data. Your privacy is very valuable to them.
I had a pop-up site demand I turn off my VPN today. The audacity.
What did it say? What site?
They love their double speak.
I love a good play on words. Good shower thought.
The fact that Meta has a C-suite position that's called Chief Privacy Officer is my favorite absurdly ironic fact.
I can't imagine how can anyone apply to that with a strait face and clear conscience, but that's prpbably true for most positions at Meta, aside from like Beat Games and the like.
You misunderstand the position. Their job is finding new and exciting ways to violate user privacy.
Violating your privacy is the heart of their business model.
Same with something like "made with carefully selected ingredients" yup selected by price , lowest.
In reality it means jack shit, it's corporatespeak at its most vapid
Your privacy is valuable to you, and that's why it's so hard for us to get our hands on your data. Since the data is so difficult to obtain, it suddenly becomes very valuable to advertisers. They are willing to pay us a lot of money for it, and that's why it's very valuable to us as well. Hand over that private data, or else!
It literally only exists as a legal liability defense mechanism.
It is legalese.
'Value' as a verb could mean in nearly any concievable context or form.
It just means 'is important to us in some unspecified way'... and then the actual specifics are in the ToS you probably don't read.
Pretty sure there is no law anyone has to use the wording "we value your privacy". It's more likely to be just something they put there to make more people consent to data processing.
Its a corpo slogan/saying that derives from trying to do good PR and also simultaneously incur literally no legal liability whatsoever.
There, that's more precise.
But yeah, this is why so much corpo speak means damn near literally nothing by way of being immensely vague or misconstuable.
