Curiously, cinci is seriously rethinking that specific stretch of road. There are currently plans oto kinda turn a bunch of it into a park...you'll never guess who started moving in to the west end a few years back...
Came here to say just that. Yup.
Yeah I was trying to think of how this could have happened. Maybe large developments in the suburbs? Then this part of town just became an area you drive through, to get where you are going. Maybe some low rent apartments there where mostly people of color lived. Add crime and mismanagement. Then eventually it’s ripe for the teardown. What a waste.
Can confirm, it's a spaghetti mess here. It's not a pleasant driving experience, and it certainly isn't a pleasant living experience.
That went from a place I would have liked to explore to an ugly hellscape I'd never want to be trapped in.

Sure, yeah, fuck cars...
But was it supposed to look better in the top picture?
Like the second picture at least has a green space.
Not saying the second looks better.. But definitely not worse
The green areas sem to be mostly grass, which while pretty, are bad at providing shade, carbon capture, and use a lot of water. So, better than a parking lot, but not by a lot.
You might not be considering the natural areas that needed to be destroyed to move all of those people and businesses. Density is better than sprawl for the environment for that reason.
So if we go back to the 50s, where do we put the rubble from highway demolition?
Where did they out the evidently much larger amounts of housing/building demolition rubble?
What an ugly city
and still houses more people, probably. because are those single-family homes in the background?
