The Witcher 4 will still "have a box" for physical game collectors even after Sony stops supporting discs in 2028, CD Projekt Red has confirmed.
So it won't actually have the game itself on physical media, they'll just be selling boxes. π

more seriously I read the article it sounds like they'll make a box (maybe merch) available with the key... Eh.
It's too bad usb-c doesn't support the read speeds to run games directly so that they could use flash drives as 'physical' copies
Usb-c does faster transfers than cd/dvd, but it's a moot point because i think the games "downloaded" off the dvd to a temp storage so they could be run ok.
USB-C is just a physical connector, Iβve seen implementations of that connector be 5V power only and the full range of USB from USB 2 500Mbps through Thunderbolt 4 at 40Gbps.
The first implementation of USB 3.0 supported 5Gbps which is just as fast as the fastest SATA SSDs.
Biggest challenge with that approach would be the expense of distributing the faster flash drives, followed by bit rot corrupting the data on those stored for years.
What if they released a blueray disc set like old games did with CDd and DVDs and it just was a 16 part install or whatever like in those days. Physical media, you get it on your computer, locally, but the media stays good for a lot longer and you don't have to worry about bitrot.
Even installing off of a flash drive would sound good to me, though. That's essentially what consoles do with games on Blu-ray. They never actually read from the disc while running these days, it just holds the install data and license.
And since it's CDPR and probably gonna be on GOG, the only hurdle is Sony not allow install with a flash drive. Might work as PC physical distribution though.
