They were confused. They thought the catch-phrase was "catch cheese" not "say cheese".

This seems like the most-likely explanation.

I witnessed this in the 90s and 2000s. AFAIK, it started in rave culture. People would lace their fingers around glow sticks and wave them in front of a friend's face. I was told that the effect is really cool if your rolling on MDMA. However, I also saw Mormon kids doing it stone sober, because they're always imitating things they see without understanding the drug component (e.g. a Mormon kid at a local high school who wore a pacifier on a necklace -- an MDMA raver accessory to give something to chew on -- despite zero awareness of drugs).

Personally, I think these photos are a combination of raver culture seeping into the mainstream, along with a trend of "reversing subject and photographer".

WEWEWEWEWEW

I guess that’s the sound of huffing duster, I can’t remember the weird thing that always happened on dxm cos it’s been a while but yeah, I have abused the shit out of my body. Much, much less now though cos I can’t physically handle come downs anymore.

Everyone wasn't? But also, you ever heard of this thing called a "fad"? You best start believing in fads, you're in one.

More like late 90's lol. Man I feel so old.

[–] zout@fedia.io 8 points 3 days ago

It's just a trend, in the early nineties (maybe late eighties) every metal band with a new album had a black and white photo of the band, each member wearing sunglasses and a doofus smile.
