Just move away from nvidia my dude, fuck 'em

[–] the_q@piefed.social 27 points 4 days ago

Nvidia is directly responsible for a large chunk of how shitty society is right now.

[–] spankysalmon@fedinsfw.app 32 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Or stop paying the company that's pushing all this BS.

Linux life is easier with AMD anyway.

My RX 6800 was cheaper than equivalent Nvidia performance card and has never caused problems in my insane distro hopping or gaming.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago

AMD is fully onboard the AI bubble as well though. Just with less money since they own a smaller part of the market than NVIDIA.

It is a sad fact that unless you buy used, there is no way around supporting an AI company when buying gpu.

Plug and play baby

So happy I bought a RX 9060 XT from AMD for 400€ in July. It now climbed to 500€ and I am watching where this goes. Fuck NVIDIA by the way.

[–] DragonOracleIX@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Hell yeah. I did the same earlier this year when my older AMD shit itself. I saw nvidia's prices, saw AMD prices, and decided that sticking with AMD was way cheaper.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Aren't AMD cards more expensive per FPS? At least they were some months ago when I was figuring out which card to buy

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't know, is that so? I am excited for a comparison.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Just did a quick check between rtx 5060ti and 9060xt, which seem to be performing quite similarly.

In my country, 5060ti goes for 420eur, while 9060xt goes for around 440eur. Quite on par actually.

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Are you sure you looked for the 16 GB version? I can find an 5060TI with 8 GB for 460€, but the 16GB versions start at 670€ (ASUS). The AMD card is more than 150€ cheaper

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 3 days ago

The 16gb version beats 9060xt in benchmarks. I looked for cards that appear to have +- same FPS.

4090 = 430W

5090 = 575W

6090 =?

Power plant purchased separately.

Almost, correct answer is 720

[–] IEatDaFeesh@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

But is it MLG No Scope compliant?

[–] Megacomboburrito@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (4 children)

My 1080 Ti still runs pretty much every game out there, granted it's only 1920x1080. You'll be fine, as long you don't care about ray tracing or have a 4K monitor or chase high FPS

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago

Still got my trusty rx 580, too

[–] Hazmatastic@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Honestly my regular 1080 only has trouble with a handful of really demanding games if I'm not too proud to bump down some settings. It's put in over 1k hours in cyberpunk, so not bad

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

These don't have ray tracing and dlss and some games won't run anymore.

This was the reason I switched from my 1060 to a completely new system.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago

1920x1080 is kind of ok for gaming, but it's rough for anything else.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

Um squid games was poor people games. And this whole title is dumb.

I don't mind it sometimes, given that more content in the Fediverse is needed in a lot of communities. And I hate reddit enough that I never visit the site, so I don't know what was reposted here or what's OC.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I remember in the beginning of reddit, 80% of memes were reposts from 9gag or canihazcheesebuger, which on their turm reposted from reddit and each other as well. The recycle cycle was very effective.

[–] ChilledPeppers@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

No joke, 90% of content here (lemmy) is reddit reposts, and it has been so for a while.

[–] veni_vedi_veni@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Ok? It's not like Reddit (the site) created the content, they just link to it. The only difference is that its not benefiting that pig fucker Fez, or whatever his name is, by driving traffic to his site

Me chugging along with my GTX 1080Ti

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You do know that when a new GPU series releases they actively buy back and destroy left over supplies to keep the prices high, right? They have been doing that for ages!

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago

I do not know that.

[–] J3N5T4R@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

My poor little 980ti doin its best but fml.

[–] Airfried@piefed.social 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I don't think many 3060 owners will ever get a 5090 to sell you their old ones. Sorry.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 days ago

Maybe not directly. 5080 owner upgrades to 6090, 3060 owner buys the cheaper 5080 as a pretty nice upgrade and sells off their 3060.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I have 3080ti and I'm glad I bought it; it's likely the last graphics card I'll have. I had a 1060 on a laptop before.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I would like someday to have an 1080 or equivalent

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

Thank you :)

If you factor in inflation, I can find a 5060 for about 30% more than I got a 1060 for when that was new. You will get far more than a 30% boost in performance.

got a 3060 laptop from costco for £600. just after the bitcoin crash of early 2020s.
