This website forces you to pay for a subscription to reject -any- of it's tracking. No, you can't just go in and reject them individually. Any selection other than "accept all" gets you this page.

Here's the start of the dialog

These things are regularly ruled to be illegal in Germany and still many big news sites use them.

Excuse me while I go block that whole domain in my network...

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I did that for a long time, but there's so many that I just kinda gave up on keeping up with it

Is Knuckles what you use if they fuck up?

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 17 points 1 month ago

Vulgar and abusive language. Thats an automatic disconnect.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 14 points 1 month ago

And they will continue the tracking, anyway.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 month ago

I wouldn't believe them. If they're doing this, they're still selling your data.

[–] CalemitousVariantK@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The writers of Black Mirror should sue every time someone steals one of their plots to make money.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Aren't they kind of just being honest about what all websites do anyway? Hell, most places you pay for are still tracking you and selling your data, so frankly this may be an upgrade over other services.

Not that this is a legit service, but aren't the two main options:

  • Pay with money
  • Pay with ads/tracking

Services cost money. It's never free. Someone is always paying

I'm ok with advertisements personally. My issue is soley with the tracking. You're correct that this is how they pay for non paying customers but I'm focused on the morality of that monetization. Staticly inserted advertisments that don't track you are fine. Like the old newspapers which had a simple advertisement placed there that didn't watch you back. That's fine.

I'd be much happier if they paywalled the article, or parts of it.

If the free version isn't viable without immoral monetization it's unviable. Don't do it, or find another way to monitize.

[–] MyVeryRealName@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Lots of people would rather be tracked than pay

[–] percent@infosec.pub 2 points 1 month ago

The ads chosen from tracking generate more revenue, unfortunately

[–] percent@infosec.pub 1 points 1 month ago

Honestly, I find it somewhat refreshing that a company offers this choice. It seems like a more honest, transparent way of doing business.

It's terrible from a marketing perspective though (this post is a good example of why)

[–] thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

this is illegal (in the eu)

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago
[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 5 points 1 month ago

I am sure it's kinda illegal in the EU

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

"Pay or Ok"

The latest scummy tactic of news sites; this started shortly after the ruling that reposting their content was grounds for a DMCA strike.

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Pay to reject tracking, but by next week your payment history is dumped online because of some website vulnerability...

Pay to be tracked is more like it.
