DigitalOcean joins as a Founding Corporate Patron with $3 million

DigitalOcean is joining the Omacom Foundation as a Founding Corporate Patron, contributing $1 million a year for three years! That’s a $3 million commitment to the development, maintenance, and spread of Omarchy. What an incredible vote of confidence in the beautiful, fun & agentic OS we’re building.

Even politics aside, I don't understand why all these companies are donating to Omarchy. It doesn't actually offer anything worth thinking about.... which makes me think it's about the politics.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 70 points 1 week ago

Dude says xenophobic and racist shit, thats all they need to hear in 2026.

On a real note though this looks like corporations trying to cash in on the up and coming Linux rise, but this explicitly does not work like that

[–] darcmage@lemmy.dbzer0.com 57 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's in the blurb. Pretty sure when he says "agentic OS", he wants it to be the default OS for consumer AI crap. All you have to do these days is just hint at AI and companies will fall over themselves to throw money at you.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 34 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think I need to start a distro at this point. See if I can get a bunch of enterprise donators... Though I suspect I'm not white supremacist enough for them. But I AM a white male so if I just shut the fuck up maybe they'll give me money anyways hoping that perhaps I share their views?

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

you can do it way more easy than DHH did. Just build a NixOS configuration and you're done. hell NixOS will even build it to an ISO for you. you can literally have it do all the things Omarchy does for a fraction of the size.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Oh I specifically meant I'd have to do an AI one to get all that corporate funding. I know how easy it would be to create "yet another distro". But I figured I'd actually go a bit further and potentially do a little more than Omarchy for better AI integration, while still allowing the user to 1) not opt into AI in the first place, 2) choose a level of configuration depth that fits them if they DO opt in. I've got some ideas, but they're still in my head (for a long time now) so I need to actually write it all down. Prefer not laying it out here because I don't want DHH's lackeys to find this somehow and steal my ideas, but of course if I deem them achievable in the first place, the things I want to build most would be distro agnostic and GPL'd because there's more benefit in having others use it and extend it than in locking it to one paltry distro that has, at the moment of writing, zero users because it doesn't exist yet.

A. many of the donors are friends of DHH B. the entire "distro" is full to the brim with AI. it's built completely via AI. so these people are looking for an ROI on it. they want this to be THE consumer AI OS. and I guarantee you it won't be free for much longer.

Fuck giving money to xenophobes. Especially ones who can't code for shit and don't understand basic Linux security.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 53 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well, looks like I'm migrating my projects this weekend.

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 33 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Same. Someone on Mastodon gave praises to https://upcloud.com/. They're also on Masto @upcloud@glitchy.upcloud.world

Their VPS plans look decent: https://upcloud.com/global/products/cloud-servers/#plans

[–] twisted@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

What’s up with all the bald men though?

Edit: nvm, only half of them are bald.

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As a bald man myself, I can not speak to their specific Baldman tribe.

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Also bald. I think growing a beard at this time is necessary to avoid the Lex Luther, Jeff Bezos rich evil billionare look.

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Agreed. Then dye it some bright color to really distance yourself from the villain look

Oh my god this whole Omarchy thing is so unbelievably corrupted.

They're laundering money while actual important FOSS projects are dying without funding.

[–] Zikeji@programming.dev 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Whoops. Looks like I'm moving the last of my customers away from them.

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 10 points 1 week ago

I just left this comment, might be an alternative for you: https://programming.dev/comment/25901788

omarchy is a bastardisation of what arch can offer.

if dhh really cared about open-source, linux and arch, he should be using his platform to educate a wider audience on how to customise their own installs.

reality is that he’s slop personified.

[–] ATS1312@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If someone that isn't a Nazi wants to vibecode an OS, and takes it seriously enough to use the AI as a learning tool? Closing holes and patching bugs as they learn? I'm down.

Let's go, I wanna join up. Should we make this as a NixOS flake?

A Nazi whose primary skills are marketing, financial connections, and Managerial "experience"? Fuck all the way off.

I feel a need to say "merry Kirkmas" in context. May dhh find rehab instead, and clean up his fucking mess.

[–] NotAnonymousAtAll@feddit.org 29 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

First time I ever heard anything about DHH (the main person that is now behind Omarchy) was when he announced he will stop using Typescript for one of his big projects, because the strict typing system makes it less fun than Javascript.

That argument is on the same level as "seatbelts in cars are bad because they restrict my movement", i.e. completely inane bullshit no sane person could take seriously.

Somehow this evidently incompetent person stumbled into enough success to now be able to spout hateful political messages without serious repercussions.

Usually when people start spouting hateful messages I lose respect for them, but there was nothing to lose in this case.

I love this Omarchy thing: it's helping separate the wheat from the chaff.

I only wished there was a site that listed all the "bad" guys... they seem to be way more numerous than I imagined.

[–] degen@midwest.social 27 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] uuj8za@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Should Drew himself be on that list? Given: https://dmpwn.info/

[–] uzername@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

that list is depressing. I just unfollowed 3 of them. Thank you.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 12 points 1 week ago

The omarchy website lists them.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 7 points 1 week ago (17 children)
[–] FizzyOrange@programming.dev 7 points 1 week ago

Several of those are fairly borderline. You would think Drew Devault of all people would understand that its ok to not be 100% squeaky clean.

I'm not saying that list doesn't include a lot of creeps, but maybe he shouldn't have included "donated to an organisation that includes someone who is antagonistic" and "is an average American Christian" along with the "fervent defender of paedophilia".

This isn't programming related but i want the omarchy fundraiser person helping fund my project. Serriously i only need like 1%

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 72 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Say some racist things and you will get money. That's how it works.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 54 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Step 1 : fork open source project.
Step 2 : customise it a little bit.
Step 3 : network with racists and reinforce their opinions
Step 4 : profit

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 6 points 1 week ago

easy. get Claude Code to build you a quickshell plugin for their plugin store and then gloat about it on youtube and twitter. that's how everyone else is doing it.

[–] graynk@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] Jarmund@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 week ago

Fascists, that's why.

[–] nemith@programming.dev 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ok. So is DHH like Epstein and just have dirt on all these CEOs and thats why he gets the money?

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 7 points 1 week ago

Wouldn't that be some crazy shit? I mean.. this timeline is not following any logic, so this could probably be a reality...

[–] keytonowhere@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

One of my favorite facts about O'Marky is how the firewall, one of two security features in this distro serious about security, wasn't even enabled. They didn't announce this gap to their users, just quietly marked it fixed. But they failed to fix it until well into the next major release.

[–] abbadon420@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago

Oh, hi marky

[–] fubarx@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago
[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 week ago

agentic

How about no

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago

I start to believe that he paid the YouTubers money in order for them to do these videos listed on the website.

[–] uuj8za@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Glad I deleted my account a few days ago.

[–] mvirts@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Ugh now I need to migrate
