a lot of new punk music is more pointed to RiotGrrl punk these days, but there is a shitload of new, really fucking good punk bands out there. We just lack a main stream outlet/major tour that showcases it anymore.

Might be a bit of a hot take: the spirit is alive but the common form drifted away from this old-school ideal.

Punk as a genre has stopped being a self-contained monolith, and started blending into other styles. There’s still a pool of traditionalists, but they’re a relative minority.

In the 90s, it bleed into hard rock (Nirvana). In the aughts, the main fork was emo-punk (a la Conor Oberst). The 2010s had a big post-punk wave (Parquet Courts, Viagra Boys). Meanwhile, on a longer timeline, industrial EDM/noise music has been the modern incarnation of the spirit of the hardcore subgenre (Death Grips), and folk-punk has been a consistent niche of its own.

And even on top of these more specific splinters, the standard indie rock genre has grown to encompass more “soft-punk” elements in recent decades (Modest Mouse, Wolf Parade).

There is a phenomenal Punk scene still but not always the stereotypical sound. Most have extra notations like Hardcore, folk, post, or some new vibe no genre can define yet etc. Doom Scroll, Chat Pile, Viagra boys, Codefendents, Aquabats, Drain, Scowl, MSPAINT and Soul glo are some vastly different sounds across the spectrum of punk to check out.

You mean like MUDRAT, Bob Vylan, shame, or Kid Kapichi? Then there's the post punk/punk adjacent stuff like Kneecap, Hyphen, Viagra Boys, Warmduscher, Yard Act, Gila Band, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs etc.
You're not going to find them listening to corporate radio or following the algorithm, but there's plenty out there.

It's still around, there might even be an active scene near you that you could join in with if you're inclined. Last few shows I've seen in the northeast U.S. were for Doom Scroll, Hans Gruber and the Die Hards, Playboy Manbaby, Sister Wife Sex Strike, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, and probably some others I'm not thinking of right this second. They all have songs about the current state of things and how expensive shit is.

Lots of bands in the UK too, offhand Lambrini Girls and Bob Vylan are pretty great. Hell if you want an example of the current state of things Bob Vylan actually had their travel Visas revoked in the U.S. so they can no longer play shows in the U.S.

One major punk artist very relevant nowadays that I haven't seen anyone mention is Jeff Rosenstock. He was very influenced by Ian MacKaye and he's famous for making the first successful donations based record label.

He first blew up with a ska band called "The Arrogant Sons of Bitches" then moved onto his punk band "Bomb the Music Industry" until moving on to a solo career. His solo stuff have been some of his best albums, and the old ones are still good.

Lots of disenfranchised youths rapping nowadays. I suppose the barriers to entry are lower so there's a lot of trash but a hardened listener will eventually find some gold.

I closest thing I ever see is folky acoustic songs or parodies with clear, understandable lyrics so you don't miss the witty anti-MAGA lyrics they wrote.

Like so many other industries, the music industry has been thoroughly consolidated by massive record labels, publishers, and corporate interests. Much of the music we're exposed to on a daily basis is no longer simply music it’s a commercial product engineered to generate as much revenue as possible.

If you're looking for something genuinely specific, unconventional, or outside the mainstream, you usually have to go looking for it yourself. Unfortunately, basic searches on YouTube or Spotify aren't necessarily going to lead you there. Their algorithms tend to reinforce what is already popular rather than uncovering the deeper corners of the musical landscape.

But that music is out there. There is an enormous amount of incredible, creative, and genuinely original music being made right now. You just have to dig past the commercial surface to find it.

They’re not terribly political - except for The Price of Smokes has Gone Up Again - but The Chats are the best punk band I’ve heard lately.

Apart from all the great bands mentioned by others, here in my city there's a pretty alive underground scene with cheap shows which are explicitly anti fascist

People are tired boss

The majority of kids under 30 are still focused on making enough money to have nice things. They were raised by parents (my generation) to think stuff is the answer to all life's problems. That is the majority of how people think in this day and age. The biggest issue amongst a lot of individuals is not having access to enough stuff (including traveling) to fill the gaping hole inside. Unfortunately, that hole is actually caused by a breakdown in community, family and communication. The kids aren't angry anymore, they are depressed.

The fundamental aspects repeat, but the specifics are always different. This time it's not an electric guitar in an abandoned building thing, it's a bedroom rapper going underground viral thing. You're not seeing it because you don't care about that style of music, just like the adults of the 70s and 80s didn't care about punk music

Huge, intense punk scene in Montreal with lots of people from many walks of life screaming about exactly what's going on right now.

We have multiple industrial buildings and hidden spots in the woods where shows happen.

Honestly a great scene.

Big scene in Sweden still with our own subgenre called Trallpunk (basically singalong punk). Lastkaj 14, Småjävlafötter, KSMB, Björnarna, Troublemakers, Just to name a few who are still active. Most bands are connected to a music label which was started in the early 00s to give more swedish punks an opportunity to reach out with their music SecondClassKids

Not really punk but spot-on political: Jesse Welles. The guy is probably the best song writer of a generation.
