Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

The OG memes don't even need text.

i still reply 14/f/cali anytime asks me my age.
and thats from like..the early/mid 90s. before memes as we knew it were a thing.
Kilroy was here

Usually gaming online or when I think about how psychopathic and hateful our current government.
Pre memes we had movies like Billy Madison and Tommy Boy. Those quotes are permanently part of my vocabulary. "Stop look at me swan", Housekeeping. You want mint for pillow?".
The oldest actual meme/Internet thing I regularly reference is "here is the earth, round" or "the cheat is grounded "
Totally! Before Internet, movies, books or even radio helped proliferate expressions of jokes and culture. Nice!
Ace Ventura 2 features heavily in my random quote repitoire.
Aahhh-like-a-glove.
Oh look, its the monopoly guy! Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Thanks for the free parking.
If you were me then i'd be you and i'd use you body to get to the top!
Nonsense poopypants!
Kinda hot in these rhinos
And on and on...
The whole movie is just a gold mine.
Same!!! I quoted it just last week at work:
THIS IS GOING TO BE A WORLD RECORD!
...
OOOOOOH!!! IT WAS RIGHT THERE!!! can I do it again?

These fine owls are still living rent free in my head.
But the worst are probably Goatse, 2girls1cup, 1guy1jar, all the nazi ascii stuff. Modern day memers have it easy.
I cannot really remember what is the oldest, but a lot of old Team Fortress 2 gm videos, live rent free in my head, and I quote them (especially just the weird noises) all the time. And I still follow the creators, that make new ones. It has evolved into a full genre over the years.
//Edit
I went and dug through my playlists. This is "only" 10 years old, but I think it summarizes well, both the absurdity of them, and how far from the actual game, the genre is.
Tribes had "Shazbot!" as a swear word. That still pops out of me on occasion.
I think that might've been a shout-out to Mork and Mindy; Robin Williams's character says that in the title sequence, after banging his head on the side of his spaceship.

Regional to Uruguay and Argentina but old as fuck.
He says "If you don't have faith in me..." context goes a long way
Ahaha nice!!! It does look almost prehistoric though xD
I had the pleasure of dropping this in a work context not that long ago:
