Is there anything more american the embarassingly losing an unneccesary war with a much smaller opponent?

Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Saudis didn't have to listen to the usa and attack the envoy that returned from Ali khamanei funeral. Trump and the Saudis share the responsibility
Apart from turning up late to it?
Imagine losing access to another strait that's critical to world Trade in the same year you lost the first one.
Sucks to be Europe right now though.
I guess UK will have some pretty huge leverage soon with Gibraltar Strait being the only way out of the Mediterranean.
Sucks to be Europe right now though.
For mostly self-inflicted reasons. If those guys weren't American vassal states they'd have just negotiated with Iran and the Houthis for safe passage for their ships.
I was going to argue that the strait is between Spain and Morroco but there is indeed a 7 km^2 UK "british overseas territory" right there at the tip. TIL.
Just the tip though...
yes, a very small tip
The tip famously called the rock.

good. Big W for anti imperialist forces around the globe

Lemmy users so deep in left wing progressive echo chamber they’re spotted joining ISIS
Zionist spreading Nazi propaganda calling all Muslims isis...
and i’m currently charging my ev using renewables down here on the gold coast!
who had that on their bingo cards!
What the fuck?
Huh?
In what way do the Houthis qualify as "Isis" that the Saudis do not?
I wouldn’t totally count out the recognized government of Yemen. Not on their own merits, they long ago lost the majority of Yemen’s population to Ansar Allah’s control and almost got wiped out by the STC (UAE-backed South Yemen separatists) earlier this year before Saudi Arabia intervened...
But, to have Saudi Arabia and much of the rest of their world diplomatically in their corner is a really great benefit that can hardly be overstated. In the aforementioned case when the STC almost destroyed the recognized government in a rapid offensive, the Saudi intervention resulted in not only the gains being reversed but the STC itself being formally dissolved all of one month later. They have quite a lot of weight to swing around.
Now, that’s NOT to say Saudi Arabia can just push Ansar Allah around like that, they’re on a completely different level than the STC. Ansar Allah, despite the small appearance on the map, is basically a state level entity with like three quarters of Yemen’s population under its control (the number they control is not terribly far behind Saudi Arabia’s own population!) and much of that population are in rugged mountains. Not easy to dislodge fighters from highly populated mountainous terrain where the population sees you as an intruder! That became abundantly clear in the last conflict where the last real coalition momentum was instead put to taking the coasts and the siege of Hudaydah. The idea being, if you can’t directly challenge Ansar Allah in their mountain fortresses as they are, instead cut off the supplies they need to wage war so their logistics fall to pieces as without access to the sea they are totally surrounded.
The problem with that however is that with the tens of millions of people densely packed in north Yemen who now require a huge amount of foreign aid, disruptions to that flow of aid like say from putting the giant port it mostly flows through under siege risks massive famine. With the intervention attracting tons of controversy due to terrible airstrikes in civilian areas on like hospitals and schools and increasing notoriety of Saudi Arabia also from things like the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, there was tremendous international pressure being placed on Saudi Arabia to back off or be made a pariah.
However… it is not certain that Saudi Arabia would face similar pressures if they undertook similar efforts to choke off Ansar Allah these days. This is not really as humanitarian minded a world as it was even eight years ago, for one. For two, Ansar Allah has through the attacks on Red Sea shipping against many different countries burned up a lot of the patience it may otherwise have been afforded by countries that previously objected to the Saudi intervention. Now, they must balance how strongly they would want to object against such measures morally vs. the damage that halts on Red Sea shipping or explosions on Saudi oil infrastructure do to their own economies.
Also, now Saudi Arabia may have some more allies up its sleeve in such an endeavor depending on how the fighting goes and if Ansar Allah continues to attack outside of Yemen’s boundaries.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said any attack on Saudi Arabia could activate the recently signed Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, days after Yemen’s Houthis launched a barrage of missiles at the kingdom.
“If there is unprovoked aggression, or a spillover of whatever is happening in Yemen into Saudi Arabia, definitely the Mecca agreement will become operational,” he told Pakistani media outlet Geo News on Tuesday night.
“There should be no doubt about that. We are bound by the terms and conditions of this pact, and … we will honour them in case there is a need.”
Previously Pakistan outright proclaimed no interest in the matter and stayed back. Them and Turkey could add quite a great deal of diplomatic or military weight and limit escalation with Iran (Iran is fine at yeeting missiles across the waves to whoever but is not really interested in antagonizing countries with powerful ground forces directly bordering it). Plus the US itself though with zero interest in providing ground forces may well be willing to actually supply other forms of help given that Ansar Allah is aligned with Iran and the present situation with Iran is deeply embarassing to the US and they would really rather not having more of Saudi oil and refined products getting knocked out or made inaccessible to the global market.
The attacks are too big for Saudi Arabia not to do something to not look like a punk that will take anything on the international stage… competing with that though, Saudi Arabia does not want to give the appearance of local instability to investors, and getting directly involved in a war doesn’t help that sentiment. And getting too involved also makes the recognized government of Yemen look like total puppets which is not very helpful for Saudi Arabia’s interests.
We’ll see probably quite a lot of updates in the time to come but anyway my prediction is that the recognized government of Yemen does not entirely crumple quite so easily (at least, not without a strong intervention shortly thereafter putting it back on life support again).
Tldr?
Edit: read it after taking a shower and getting an extra pep of energy and was actually an interesting read.
This take was more in depth by far than any of the comments I saw relating to this news on That Other Website
concerning if true
is this ai?
how did you write several paragraphs without mentioning america?
Unfortunately I fell short and mentioned the USA midway through the third paragraph from the bottom lol, but if I’m posting in world news I don’t want to make it all about the US if I can help it
legend 💪
This thread is a terrible show of asshats. I'm glad it's not representative of most of what I've found on Lemmy.
Do better. Please.
Suckers and losers.
Americans, go fuck yourselves.
