We got Trump in no small part because Nixon was pardoned.

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

14A3 disqualification and legally nullify the entire second term (erases all pardons and eliminates all immunity), impeachment, prosecution for crimes against humanity, put him against the wall

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 53 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

Nope. Pardoning Nixon was a mistake that should not be repeated.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 3 points 2 weeks ago

Giving him a general pardon and not for specifics was the mistake. Alternate history for Nixon going to trial or any other course other than the one he took is a wild ride. As is most points in history, but it would have been an ugly America, so Ford's spoken motive had some merit. Whether Reagan makes it in seems to be a debated point, depending on how long the Nixon trial(s) go.

I think the country needs nuremburg trials

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Guillotines are tired and boring.

#WoodchipperParty

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Guillotines are a metaphor, implying the French Revolution.

Wood chippers are a metaphor for Fargo, North Dakota.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Who said anything about metaphors?

[–] jackal@infosec.pub 5 points 2 weeks ago

Hear, hear! We need to have an absolute fuckton of trials for people involved in this blatantly corrupt administration.

[–] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago

Even if Trump copied Nixon by resigning early so Vance could pardon him, he’d still be facing various state charges. (And he could always be extradited outside the US for war crimes.)

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ford shouldn’t have pardoned Nixon.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

Nixon looks like an angel compared to Presidents after him.

The next president should arrest every other president and conscribe them to slave labor until the nation's school lunch debts are repaid.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And private prisons all closed.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

Replaced with The People's Prison where I can throw things at all the incarcerated presidents like a horribly mismanaged zoo

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Does this include digging most of them up and propping them up on trial in the manner of Pope Formosus?

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

I think that's up to the president, sounds stinky

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 weeks ago

Absofuckinglutely not! Nixon shouldn't have been pardoned either!

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago

Bro what next president

Nice try, Don. You're not getting off that easy. With the TRUMP-EPSTEIN FILES (TM) alone you're looking at way more time than you have left on the earth you're working hard to destroy.

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Of course not. He should send Trump and his sons to Guantanimo.

[–] pbhj@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You should drop him into Iran to face punishment from the Iranian families whose children he bombed at school.

Should they or would they? Should they? Of course not. Will they ? Of course because no POTUS wants to set precedent of accountability.

[–] whoneedsgravy@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

It’s like that thing in the drive thru, where the person in the car ahead paid for your coffee. The President pardons the president behind him so the next president can pardon him.

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

NO. Pardons shouldn't cover unrepentant criminals who know what they're doing.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I'm sure of only one thing, the rest of the world won't pardon you so easily you fucktards

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Ford was a loyalist who put party over country. We needed a reckoning and that never happened. If it had happened, you'd have found a much different Reagan and Trump presidency.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 6 points 2 weeks ago
[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

He won’t live long enough to face consequences. Let him pass in infamy as the most corrupt ever. Let him be featured only in history about how fragile democracy can be.

And dish out justice for his minions and sycophants, everyone who violated the constitution, broke laws or enriched themselves. Especially including his family

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

He doesn’t need one. SCOTUS said it’s all legal.

[–] Toasticus@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Hard to pardon someone who hasn't like...been sentenced or impeached yet. For some reason.

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

except that is literally what Ford did to Nixon, and pardons aren't a thing for impeachment anyway (for US federal offenses)

Well no, but the next president will likely be Republican and will surely do it. We can't vote them out anymore. Our last chance was 2024. We have to overthrow them. If we do that, then we should hang Trump.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

No, but they will.

It's a big club, we ain't in it, and their class solidarity is absolute.

[–] chilicheeselies@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

No. We need to make examples.

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The whole pardon thing should be abolished ASAP!

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

The pardon isn't the problem, it's who gets elected. The power of the pardon has existed for a thousand years or so in English Common Law.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The next "president" will quite likely be named trump.

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

If they run Hillary or Harris again, you're probably right.

Jon Stewart should be president. And Mark Kelly should be his VP. Media presidents have done exceptionally well at achieving their objectives. The problem is their shitty objectives, not their celebrity.

[–] ElcaineVolta@kbin.melroy.org 2 points 2 weeks ago
[–] Pollo_Jack@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

If he is pardoned, we will get Nixon 3.0 but somehow dumber and more corrupt.

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

No. The correct course of action is a public hanging.

[–] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Man I don't even give a damn anymore. This is what its always been they used to just keep appearances up. It's a circus of our suffering for the aristocracy.

Fuck Trump. Fuck the next president too. Fuck them all. None of them give a fuck about us or our children.

We should start over.

[–] peacepath@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Is there a chance the next president of the US be neither republican nor democrat (for the parties labels)?
