Probably curious about why I, an atheist, have the Book of Mormon, the Catholic Apocrypha, the Books of Enoch, the Quran, and the standard Bible along with my collection of books on energy healing and astrology.

[–] isles@infosec.pub 11 points 2 days ago

Well-read atheists have more credibility

[–] Doublenut@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If an atheist didnt have these I'd consider them a contrarian rather than an atheist. Maybe agnostic but not an atheist, atheists have made an informed decision which you can't do without being informed.

[–] whoxtank28@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I don't have to read fairy tales to refute that they were real events that actually happened. I would tend to agree with your overall sentiment, but if someone was raised non-religious, had to take history classes, and had a light exposure to different mythological frameworks, I would not say that they are uninformed if they claim to be atheist. I dont have to do a deep dive on Christmas lore to come to the conclusion that Santa is not real.

My reaction would be "I guess they were well-informed about their choices."

A military medal that was awarded to me.

I have never been a member of any nation’s armed forces.

Imagine their entire family has no idea where the medal came from, but like 12 random people on the internet have the full story.

Weirdest for sure would be the contents of my journals. For a while during and after the pandemic I wrote a lot of entries very altered and I've also written a lot of entries at the top of some pretty spectacular manic episodes and the bottom of some very dark holes. I can't read them myself because they make me seem quite insane.

Most unexplainable would be a 50 alliance credit note from the Firefly/Serenity universe. They were produced by a gaggle of nerds and exact down to the paper, which is a semi-transparent nylon blend. I was given 300 credits in mixed bills as a joke from someone I had a one night stand with as payment for services rendered, but I've given them out to various fans of the show I've met over the 20 or so years they've been in my possession. If you weren't a mega fan of the show though, they would look like money from some obscure Asian country.

An antique magic wand made of carved oak and opals, I keep locked in an antique wooden case in the top / back of my closet. The entire reason I keep it there like that, is so that when I die, someone will find it.

In my desk drawer is a small, plastic black box. Emerging from its surface is a toggle switch, some lights and wires that end in alligator clips. There is no writing at all, inside or out, It starts blinking lights and making an ominous buzzing sound if you let the wires touch each other while it's turned on. I built it myself, and you've got no hope of figuring out what it's for if you don't know already.

spoilerIt's a test light for setting the external ignition timing on airplane engines, to make sure both spark plugs in each cylinder fire at the same time. I doubt even most aircraft mechanics would recognize it because it doesn't look like a "real" one.

The massive horse dildo may be a bit of an head scratcher, though knowing me - maybe not that surprising thing to find.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 31 points 3 days ago

I think you can find something better to scratch your head with...

I have a collection of Quack medical devices from the early 1900s. Some of them are used now as electrostatic sex toys.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 2 days ago

I'd love to see pictures !

Check the bottom of your desk if you like a good shag sitting by it.

Nice try, CIA guy, how about you come on down and see it for yourself if you really must know.

[–] dfyx@lemmy.helios42.de 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

My family probably wouldn't be surprised about anything I own. They know the kind of guy I am.

A stranger might be a bit concerned about a certain wooden chest in my dining room. Large enough to fit an adult man (yes, we tried) but filled to the brim with swords, axes, pieces of armor and a 3 foot wooden spoon.

Edit: second place to a glittery pink princess themed friendship book filled with entries from adult millennials who like retro games, horror movies and metal.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Hmmm. Probably a (real) human spine (not my own).

[–] impairedimperator@lemmy.zip 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

...was it ethically sourced, at least?

[–] Phunter@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Keepsake from a Mortal Kombat style fatality execution no doubt.

[–] DaGeek247@fedia.io 12 points 2 days ago

That sounds ethically sourced to me! Ain't nothing more ethical than a brutal takedown, fatality style.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hmmm. I actually don't know. I hope so. It was from a chiropractor relative that passed. (Not his spine, but he had a human one for display purposes).

[–] impairedimperator@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's like...99% probably stolen from some Indian graveyard then...lots of bones used by anatomists back in the day (1800-1950)came from graveyards in india.

Remember that one really dark hentai that became a meme, "Emergence" or "Metamorphosis?"

I got the bright idea to get a paperback copy of it and now it's just waiting for some catastrophe to unearth it from its hiding place, like a time capsule of bad decisions

[–] MrOtingocni@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

A Time Capsule of Bad Decisions.

I like that.

The few dozen communist books I have

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think you mean we have, comrade.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I do share when I can, but usually I just send links to online resources and books as that's typically easier for most people.

A tiny clay penis made by my best friend years ago.

I drew some pornographic stuff but the surprising part is how wholesome it is. I usually come off as jaded or cynical
