One reading would be that there is no sex in the Toy Story universe, because Toy Story is essentially a classic story about magic which disappears at the end of childhood/onset of adolescence, only remade as a CGI demo.

Of course, that narrative is from an earlier time, when childish things were put aside, and before “adulting” became a word. These days, a Toy Story universe would presumably have a red-light district full of sentient sex toys, though it would have to be an off-brand one, as Disney still own the IP and would never sign off on anything like that.

This question is 100% valid, but I really don’t want to think about it

Excellent thought, please never take your meds

Well why are tablets sentient but not TVs? Why not computers? Why not cars? Why not game consoles?

[–] Khanzarate@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (5 children)

They're sentient if the child thinks of them as such. Andy's etch-a-sketch was used in play as a character, so it gets thoughts. The Lilypad, with its decorative face and hands, gets the same thing.

Really, the only gap in this logic I can think of in the toy story universe is the shipping crate of buzzes that no child has even seen yet, but besides them, toys tend to wake up and be alive when interacted with, either by a child or a toy that has itself come alive from a child. S Even sitting on a store shelf, a child will still see the toy and imagine on occasion, so this still works for Stinky Pete.

This is more like a showerthought thing. But they probably are sentient and like it

[–] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Plot twist: Buzz and Woody were not originally Andy's toys in the script.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

I like to think so.

Well, technically they're being raped, but they like it. It's like when a race of creatures in a fantasy setting are happy in slavery. They naturally enjoy it the way toys naturally enjoy being played with.

I think the universe lore of toy story is that a kid's imagination is what brings toys to life. So a kid is required for a toy's sentience.

That casts the original premise in a far darker light. Thanks, I hate it.
