Aside from the fact that "he was coming at me" is entirely inconsistent with shooting someone in the back, I find it astonishing this man has internalized and is willing to admit out loud to an NYT reporter that he believes the words "I feel my life is in danger" are a magic incantation that absolves you of guilt when you shoot someone

“I said, ‘I feel my life is in danger.’ I said that ’cause I know that’s what they say,” Mr. Mathews told the officer. “And he went around the side of his car and started coming at me, and I shot him.”

In many states, they are.

Sure, as long as it's even remotely true. When evidence says otherwise, straight to jail.

Maybe I'm naive, but I really believe that had he said "I told them 'I feel my life is in danger' because I was afraid he would shoot me," he'd have a stronger case. Ohio specifically requires "reasonable belief," not simply pronouncing the words, and by acknowledging that he made the claim because "that's what they say" rather than as a report of actual fact, I believe it will be harder for his defense attorney to rebut the prosecution's inevitable assertion he did not act in self-defense. While knowing cops can help you avoid getting into the system following a crime, saying in an NYT article you think you should have the same protections as law enforcement because you play in their poker game is not a popular claim to make, even amongst the most dogmatic MAGAts, and I don't think this is going to go as well for Mr. Matthews as he expects.

“This country is in a big divide right now,” Mr. Jedlinsky lamented. “It’s, ‘You’re either with us or against us.’ You’ve got a pick a side and hate the other side.”

When one side's baseline of reality is founded on it being acceptable to illegally overthrow foreign governments, lie about immigrants as an excuse to deport them, rewrite history through a Christian nationalist lens, take away life-preserving health care from the poor, destroy the planet through climate change, and lower taxes on billionaires, there is no room to compromise.

i mean one "side" is hate, it's why they Vote Trump. This is not a both sides thing.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

If only that were just the one side.

Yeah but that's not what they meant.

They had one gun between the two of them? Is it like a timeshare?

[–] guyoverthere123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Firearm timeshares!

You too could own some time with this gun!

It's a tough economy man.

This must be that armed, polite society that supposedly is created by widespread gun ownership.

I hope they were very polite as they exchanged .45 inch and 9 mm arguments.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Yeah, which was the good gun owner?

Trumper got a gun out first.

Other guy got a gun.

Trumper shot him once and jammed, other guy didn't jam.

And according to the survivor, the 80 year old trumper started the violence with a headbut.

Mr. Mathews had a .45-caliber handgun in his car. He fired first; when he pulled the trigger a second time, no bullet came out. Mr. Mattai had a 9-millimeter pistol in his car. He fired back at least four rounds. The bullets sprayed across Mr. Mathews’s car and into his open window as Mr. Mathews drove away. They pierced his door frame and the driver’s seat, missing him by inches.

missing him by inches.

Shame, that

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Like that time a guy got shot in the ear

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 13 points 8 hours ago

And then millions of dumbasses wore diapers on their ears for weeks afterward

Small correction: the Trumper accused the other guy of headbutting him, which the other guy denied, but did admit to grabbing the Trumper by the hair. The lone witness couldn't corroborate the account of the headbutt.

Typical MAGA scum - they hate free speech and want to murder their neighbors while disguising themselves with the ceremonial trappings of philosophies which espouse the opposite.

Me and my dog park best friend of 5 years that I still don’t know by name, but by their dogs’ names:

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 8 points 9 hours ago

me and my kid's friend's parents. "ah, you're xyz's dad/mum"

The fact that this is even possible adds to the long list of reasons I don't want to go to that country
