Theres a not so secret third option, don't date folks that believe in such nonsense.

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 1 points 9 minutes ago

Nobody said anything about dating

I used to be a bit of a dick about astrology. I still think it's nonsense, but now I kinda view it as a structure for people to explore their own emotions and as a kind of authority struct to get people to treat those emotions as valid. Ultimately I feel like its no different than me sharing emo song lyrics with an "omg they understand me frfr" type message. Maybe the astrology believer isn't upset because Venus is in retrograde or whatever, but they are upset their emotions are valid. I don't gain anything from being a wet blanket about scientific accuracy in that situation, and they feel like I am invalidating their emotions if I choose to be that scientifically accurate wet blanket. Plus, retrograde is a dope word and I'm not sure if I'd know it if not for the crystal girls I've dated

yes. they want to feel their emotions are valid. even if they aren't. Astrology and other theoretical systems also take the locus of control out of their own authority and place it in a higher authority to which they are subjected.

and therein lies the problem. not every emotion is valid. some emotions are invalid. but if you aren't responsible for the causes of your emotions... you're not responsible for figuring out which ones are valid or invalid. they are something that happens to you, not something you control.

and happy well-adjusted folks... learn to figure out which is which, and unhappy folks... can't or won't do this. and a huge part of therapeutic processes is ... learning to identify and assess your own emotional states and whether or not to act on them.

Explains why I'm horribly unhappy I have Alexithymia.

Don't believe in astrology though.

(Edit: also emotions can't be "valid" or "invalid" they're just the source of your motivations really.)

As long as they make fun of you for having an MBTI phase, then all is well in love and peace

Or just don't try to get laid with stupid people.

Dated a girl and, while we were walking through the park, she points up at the sky. "Oh look, Chemtrails". I absolutely bust up laughing, because I assume I've accidentally stepped into a relationship with a conspiracy theorist. She looks incredibly confused. I explain what chemtrails are. She gets even more confused. We whip out our phones for a minute. She says, "Omg I meant contrails"

She's a lawyer at a white shoe firm now and makes, like, twice as much as I do in IT. Also, absolutely incredible in the sack.

First day of uni. Having lunch with 3 people.

"Hey do any of you watch my little pony?"

I burst out laughing. Turns out guy was super serious. He was convincing enough that he managed to get me to watch half of friendship is magic before I decided i would never talk to him again.

Solution: date an astronomer

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (2 children)

astrology believers is about 30% of the population. a few billion folks

astronomers are about 0.00016% of the population. (there are only 12,500 globally)

I went on a couple of dates with someone who had a Astronomy PhD, but worked in marketing. Not sure that counts. She did not believe in astrology, but made fun of me for working in research rather than industry.

There's much more interest in science than there are careers in it.

I teach scuba and underwater photography at a major university as a side gig. I have dozens of former students with advanced degrees in aquatic biology who now work in retail.
