The best European invention was the Suez canal, preventing people from realising that Africa is also the same landmass.

I propose we dig a similar canal from the north of Russia to the Black sea to unambiguously become a continent. Some would argue Caspian sea is more appropriate, but come on: Connecting the Black sea to the White sea? That's poetic.

This plan would cost trillions, benefit no one and have devastating consequences for millions of people. I will not be answering questions.

In 1999, the warty comb jelly colonized the Caspian Sea via the UDWS. The establishment of this population led to a 60% reduction in the number of sprat, which in turn led to a reduction in the population of sturgeon and seals.

Beautiful ethereal alien ate all the babies :/

Europe and Asia are the same continental mass but Africa is not. Africa is moving independent to the Eurasian continent and is even slowly producing a new continent at the horn of Africa. So yes, it's true that Europe and Asia are the same continent but Africa is not. It is also slowly moving into Europe. That's why the Alps exist.

Behold, the 16 continents:

From Wikipedia.
You are of course free to define continent how you want, but I am free to prefer Afroeurasia over a North America that includes parts of Siberia and half of Japan.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bro actually believes in plate tectonics 💀

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

It’s still so wild to me that something so fundamental and basic was figured out only in the past 60-80 years.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm happy to include Japan in North America. Sad to lose parts of California, but it feels fair, especially since we get to keep cuba.

Also this is leaving me wondering about arctic earthquakes…

India then should also count as a separate continent since it's on a separate plate. It's not clear cut.

[–] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

It is often called Indian subcontinent,

America is also the same landmass. Just has some water inbetween.

Europe is actually more a collection of large islands that have temporarily decided to exist as a unified land mass because Africa and Asia are squeezing it from both sides (geologically speaking)

[–] trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago

Geologically speaking India and surroundings are also not Asia but a separate continent running into Asia creating the Himalayas

Asia was named such by the Europeans, meaning something like 'the land of the sunrise' and thus referencing its Eastern position relative to Europe.

Etymonline cites a possible Akkadian origin for 'europe' meaning 'to go down, set', which would mirror the origin for the word 'asia'.

In other words, Europe and Asia might literally mean 'the western and eastern bit,' making perfect sense.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Thus reaulting in Eurasia being the setting and rising land, which is fitting because the sun certainly does do both things there from what I hear (I've only been to North America according to the tectonicists in this thread)

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

c. 1300, from Latin Asia, from Greek Asia, speculated to be from Akkadian asu "to go out, to rise," in reference to the sun, thus "the land of the sunrise." Used by the early Greeks of what later was known as Asia Minor; by Pliny of the whole continent.

As a European, yeah, this does make more sense.

[–] blibla@slrpnk.net 25 points 1 week ago

you mean north west asian? yea

[–] reader@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

plus

far west Asia: Africa

south south east Asia: Austrailia

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Don't forget elevated east Asia. (The moon)

[–] reader@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

and hot Asia: the center of the earth

[–] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago

I fail to see why it should be asia centric.

Surely it makes more sense to call it Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe And A Bit North... :-)

[–] majster@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Yeah its called Eurasia. Some Russians are quite fans of this kind of thinking.

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 week ago

It's Ourasia, comrade

hehe suddenly Italy and Spain are "the nordics"

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This is unironically true. You can call it Eurasia if you're feeling charitable to the pale demons.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 4 points 1 week ago

I know the japanese and koreans are pretty pale but calling them demons is a bit much don't you think?

Disgusting Kazhaqstan-centric world view. smh

And that point is obviously Mongolia

Iirc we have the ancient greeks to thank for the current distinction. They named Europe the region north of greece, and Asia the region east of Anatolia, and then eventually decided that their actual boundary should be the middle of the black sea
