Every single one of those websites is not crucial to existence even remotely. Let’s all collectively show them they don’t matter anymore.

The problem is that most people don't care about digital privacy and wouldn't think twice when asked to scan their face to access an app or website.

Not only are they not necessary, they're actually harmful to existence. Admittedly I use YouTube somewhat through privacy front ends, but quitting all the others has been great for my health. Using nebula has also minimised my use of YouTube.

YouTube is the only one left for me as well and I’ve been considering Nebula myself. One thing I do try to avoid though is all of the rage bait stuff. I actively filter it out and focus only on videos that teach me things. So a lot of science, food, carpentry, and other crafty kind of channels and videos. Oh, and a lot of animal ones.

I love nebula for a lot of the topics you listed, highly recommend it!

Any free alternatives for YouTube?

[–] blackwall@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Grayjay is a nice front end that doesn’t require sign in.

[–] ferric_carcinization@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 hours ago

Peertube is probably the closest. I don't really use either, but I've understood that peertube is a bit lacking in content.

As you're here on lemmy.ml, I doubt it, but if you happen to be a "cryptocurrency enthusiast", then odysee might also be an option, though I'm not sure hiw much of it is open-source.

Why did all the American companies suddenly start asking for my ID?

If an app/website requires a face scan I won't use it

[–] enbee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 9 hours ago

lol one of my gmail accts tried to get me to face scan yesterday. some crazy shit man, email does not need my face.

[–] Nokkelost@lemmy.world 97 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Deleted Reddit after I got asked to do this to Confirm my age.

I didn’t need ro access any 18+ content on that platform but for me this was the alarm bell that made me actually delete my account.

[–] zangwill@lemmy.zip 38 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The problem is that Reddit NSFW is an extremely broad category that doesn't only include porn. So many posts and memes are tagged with it. Realizing that I'm now seeing a censored, inauthentic version of Reddit made me delete the app.

[–] archy@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago

The whole brutal death metal community is NSFW because if the album covers, and I don't wanna flash my face to that platform just for the music I enjoy listening

[–] ch00f@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

I had to scan my face to access the $20k of I-bonds I already had with the Treasury.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (4 children)

Why? They did not mention the reason. What do these companies do with our face scans?

[–] degen@midwest.social 3 points 5 hours ago

I would post the super Mario 64 face, but that would be minimizing it
