People are forgetting the largest group of data centers are motivating: non-voters and non-voters tend to not have a party affiliation and thus will probably vote Democrat, like they did in 2020

[–] kaitco@lemmy.world 59 points 1 week ago (9 children)

Nothing will push them to vote Dem.

They may vote for an independent candidate or not vote at all, but they will not vote Dem, regardless of how many Dem policies align with their own.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 48 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That defeatism is exactly what the fascists want.

[–] AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it really defeatism, though? Simply not voting at all could turn tides. And it's not like Republicans haven't proven them right again and again and again and again. Republicans are conditioned HARD to never, ever consider voting for a Democrat.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think it is considering the assertion was they're never going to change... On an article about them changing.

[–] AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

It's not saying that Republicans are voting Democrat, though. It's just saying there's a surge in votes for Democrats in rural areas that are traditionally conservative. That could mean that Republicans are voting for Democrats, but past evidence suggests it's far more likely to just be latent Democrats actually bothering to go out and vote in areas where they'd traditionally get drowned out.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Just because many of the MAGA are beyond redemption, people still need to VOTE! A lot of the reason we have trump 2.0 is because 66% of voters didn't vote.

[–] VinegarChunks@lemmus.org 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Obama won in 2012. Trump won in 2016. Then a bunch of his voters switched and Biden won in 2020. And then a bunch of his voters switched to Trump in 2024.

It seems inarguable that a critical number of voters are absolutely capable of changing their minds.

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

What you’re missing is that not the same amount of people voted in all of those elections. 2012 and 2020 had high voter participation, 2016 and 2024 did not. Trump got fewer votes in 2016 than Romney did in 2012. If everyone who voted for Obama in 2012 had also voted for Clinton, Trump never would have won.

Same thing with ‘24, if everyone who voted for Biden in ‘20 had voted for Harris in ‘24, we never would’ve had Trump 2. This is why I think Trump isn’t very popular, he just wins by default when the Dems run a bad campaign or have an uninspiring candidate (side note, I totally think America is ready for a woman president, just not Clinton or Harris specifically)

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wouldn't them voting for an independent candidate still mean they're not voting for a republican? Wouldn't that still be a net plus?

Depends. Data centers are a bipartisan issue. Don’t believe the bot feeds that try to play it off as otherwise.

[–] dreamkeeper@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Some of them actually will. Not everyone who dumbly voted for Trump is a hardcore magat, it just looks that way on social media

I live in maga central and I do know people who've changed over to voting for Dems.

There's really no need for this level of cynicism. I understand why you feel this way but it doesn't help anything.

Just wait until they hear about what billionaires are doing to their children.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm not convinced that MAGAs would actually see a problem with that...

Yea.. my super maga dad is all pissed off about data centers. Don't think it would get him to vote dem, but it did sway his primary vote towards an anti DC candidate.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 7 points 1 week ago

It’s a majority hate line, regardless of party. There’s always that one voice arguing for in any feed, but with bots out on patrol that is expected.

A shitton of voters will NEVER vote for a Dem, no matter how bad things get. For some it's gun rights, for others it's being anti-abortion or anti-LGBT, and most believe liberals are EXTREMISTS because Fox News pounds that into their brain 24/7.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 15 points 1 week ago

With how close our elections typically are, you don’t need to convince every single one, just picking away at the fringes should be enough

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (11 children)

i wonder if they would change their behavior even if both parties changed their stances on the issues, like republicans calling for gun bans (for anyone on their shitlist) and democrats to keep it as it is

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Well the funny thing is, it was Republicans that suggested taking guns from trans people. I think this confused MAGA. They didn't know if they should be pro-guns or anti-trans.

Turns out »bringing the future to rural America« is a tougher sell when the future arrives as a windowless warehouse guzzling water and electricity while your bills climb. Republicans get the backlash, Democrats get the votes, and both parties get checks from the same tech lobby. Truly bipartisan innovation.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Polls regarding voting intent have become incredibly unreliable over the last decade.

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Almost like the reporting on it is intentionally misleading. Really odd.

It's not the data centers that people hate, it's the total, absolute lack of care of human well being that can only come from conservative leadership implementing said data center, the software, the laws, the AI, the jobs, the taxes, the society, etc.

Oh wait, this isn't actually about datacenters at all, it's because Republicans are fucking awful human beings and awful at everything, and are ruining everything.

I'll believe it when I see it.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'll believe it when Trump is hanging from a lamppost. Until then, these headlines are disinformation and should be disregarded.

[–] TransNeko@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

that poor lamppost... what did it do to you for you to punish it that badly?

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don’t really believe this. Yes, a lot hate data centers but they blame dems.

[–] tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They blame dems, but it seems like they see the less mainstream democrats that are pushing away from the corporate dems as more promising, like there have been a handful of former Trump voters who said they liked Mamdani because he's doing something different and trying to make things more affordable for average people.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Some Republican operatives called a bunch of voters who flipped from Trump to Mamdani and asked why? And some of them said Mamdani was conservative. The operatives were like no he's not he's socialist, to which they said Mamdani was talking about things being affordable, which is a conservative position. These people really are fucking stupid as shit.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It is seriousely beyond me that for so many people it first has to hurt them before they react. Instead of thinking long term based and not short term emotional and egotistical

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

I've witnessed so much of it at this point that I've come to accept it.

It still hurts to watch though. Nothing you do will convince them until they hurt just like the rest of us. Even if you tell them that it will hurt them eventually, even if you beg and plead for their own safety, until they feel that pain they won't care.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Conservative rural voters don't detest datacenters, they detest density, traffic, noise, etc. they assume datacenters will bring. This same "not in my backyard"-ism defeats other things that would be environmentally good, but sometimes folksy ignorance happens by chance to do the right thing.

[–] Kurtismayfield@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 week ago

Never going to happen.

Watching all the farmers on TikTok blame "Washington " for their current trade woes have taught me that they will not do one thing to change their political "views". They will never vote for the market liberals.

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's a travel Youtuber I used to watch who goes around to places in the US to "just ask questions" to the locals. (read: looks for conservative opinions)

He has a couple of videos where he goes to natural disaster affected areas. The locals said in the Trump years the government provided more support than the Biden administration. I'm finding that kind of hard to believe considering the news stories seem to say the opposite.

Polls might go one way or the other on certain issues, but the GOP has done a good job of psychologically priming their base to reflexively default voting for them in the end.

Decades of leftist organizing couldn't do it. One server farm drinking the town aquifer to make AI slop did it in a year.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago

As they say in labor organizing, the boss is the best organizer

It's too bad that Democrats are also pro data center.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes. But it is important to note that ACTUAL Democrats and left wing candidates in local elections are not the same as the corporate neoliberals

[–] LemmySuxNow@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How in the ever loving fuck do you figure that? Democrats are a neoliberal party from the top down. The only places they allow leftists to actually run are places they'd win as a third party anyway. Democrats exist to stop the left just as much as Republicans.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Uh, no they aren't because they have democratic socialists and social Democrats? What do you mean?

You think Bernie, AOC, Tallarico, Ilhan Omar, etc are all neoliberals?

Please don't, we already have to fight all of these blue magas without takes like this.

I know that the corporate Democrats (neoliberals) are funding maga against the left. That's my issue with them. But the party does have good people in it although they are not in control at all right now

More copium for the masses. No one is leaving MAGA. Anyone smart enough to do this would have done it back when he was found to have raped children. The rest are bought and paid for simps.

are they, or they just only vote on this single issue, and then they go right back to voting republican.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

they got their abortion 'win', guns aren't being 'taken away', dipshit is doing a bang-up job hating the 'correct people' and shredding social services, and the climate change hoax is sufficiently contained (it is not, but these are science deniers)....

so i guess there's no single issue left that's calling them... so 'data centers' it is.

Strong guarantee that the data center issue is not enough to get conservatives voting for any democrat no matter how much they talk about jesus or whatever

[–] Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

It's funny I see this interviews etc... and I'm still not convinced

the dumbest rural 24/7 fox news watching, over 50 year old, truck driving, mozzarella stick and ice cream treat eating, "Applebee's, redlobster and olive garden are fancy eatin" Hogs will never vote in a democrat.

Like if Kansas, Iowa, or Nebraska flips blue maybe I'll change my mind

if Mississippi flips blue I'll go to church
