The scene in Tremors when the car is getting pulled underground really got me. I was way too young to be watching that movie. Love it now though.

The opening credits of Tales from the Darkside. The music scared me so bad that I’d cover my ears until the show had started.

Still gives me a wiggins.

Poltergeist, no question, slept with the lights on for 2-weeks behind that shit.

My neighbor friend's dad took me and her the day before 5th-grade started. That man levitated out his seat when that giant skull leaned out of the closet. My little brain: "oh shit oh shit oh shit the adult is scared..." To his credit, the movie was PG because PG-13 didn't exist in 1982. But still, c'mon Dave!

Didn't sleep, couldn't eat the cafeteria slop, it was 105F, heat stroked out in the hall crawling back from lunch recess. It was a very memorable day.

'Pipes' from Ghostwatch. I was 11. First proper Halloween. I'd watched scary films before, like Silence of the Lambs and Poltergeist both of which scared the crap out of me but Pipes was on a completely different existential plane.

I had a lot going on with my parents, too much for a child to deal with tbh. That Halloween was my first proper going out trick or treating, the first and only one which actually felt like a halloween. Then I got home and got to watch a Halloween special with Craig Charles from Red Dwarf no less. I believed it was real and I freaked out, so instead of letting me watch the end they sent me to bed and I just kept waking up screaming. I remember them being so angry at me because I couldn't settle.

For probably a year afterwards I used to lie terrified and alone for hours in the dark listening out for any noise and trying to be as quiet and as still as possible. I didn't really get over it until I was about 13. When I rewatched it as an adult I realised it would have been so much better if they had just let me watch the end.

This is embarrassing, but I was really, really young.

Invasion of the Saucer Men

I watched it during a Saturday morning creature feature on TV.

It has a disembodied alien hand that crawls around attacking people. The hand has needle-like nails on the fingers that it uses to inject victims with poison. It terrified me. I spent years jumping to my bed from the door in case there was a hand hiding under the bed.

FYI, if I remember correctly, the "poison" it injects is just alcohol. If it attacked you, you just ended up drunk.

War of the worlds. I was probably much too young to be watching it but that gave me a fear of aliens for several years.

I was too terrified to watch Killer Klowns from Outer Space on VHS growing up. Picking out a movie I would always quickly skip over it and try not to look for too long. The first time I watched it in my 20s I was laughing my ass off at both the movie and the fact that I had made it that far in life thinking it was really scary.

Same goes for the book Slaughterhouse Five. It must have had some pop culture inertia if they made at least five of them.

The Fog. I couldn't sleep for weeks after watching that movie.

Darkness Falls scared the crap out of me in 2003, when i was 32. I spent the next 22 years unable to go to bed without turning the light on over the stairs. Then we moved to a one-story house.

My husband said the caterpillars with the Cheshire Cat. 🤷

When I was 10 I had nightmares from the episode "Detour" from X-Files. I previously moved to my mother and she and my stepfather had to work at night. We also had a dog, that barked a lot. So the setting was perfect.. took me months to get over it :D

I saw Ghoulies at a babysitter's house when I was 6. It was the first remotely scary thing I had ever been exposed to.

It opens with a satanic occult ritual. This was peak Satanic Panic, and my Assembly of God church was teaching me that Satan was real and people who worshipped him were actually performing ritual sacrifice. So in my little-kid perception, it was basically a documentary.

I had nightmares about it until I left the church in my early 20s. As part of my deconstruction process, I watched the film and saw how ridiculous it really was.

I didn't watch Robocop when it was new, but we rented Robocop 2. My mother made me leave during the disembowling scene, and I had this inflated idea of how bad it was. It really wasn't. What they did to Murphy in the beginning of the first one was far worse.

Then there's the third one where a little girl with a laptop hacks a robot between its legs where it can't get her and Robocop himself flies. Yeah, that shit was dumb.

There was a SA scene that really got to me and I forgot what it was. Found it years later so I could never watch that film again. Showgirls. I remember it being much worse, but it was still pretty bad. Also not the worst SA scene I've seen. All I'm gonna say is, "Jena Malone's first movie." IMDb will be very helpful in advising you which film to never watch (assuming you could ever find it, and unedited, at that — I mean Lifetime airs it from time to time but they gotta cut all the bad shit out). Easily the most disturbing film I've ever seen, just because that kind of shit happens. Oh, and if you look up the author, she just threw North (or South) Carolina under the bus because South = Incest Country. She's from fucking California. So yeah, that shit does happen everywhere, and for the most part, nothing's done about it. Huge TW on that whole thing. Yeah, staying up late watching Showtime was not a good thing.

A bit later, but the American The Ring (remake of Ringu). Was it better? Eh... It had its moments. The creature design on the teen girl being scared to death was too good, though. That shit haunted me for a while. So I set it as my wallpaper on my laptop to desensitise myself. People routinely asked me what the fuck my problem was when they saw it. Still creepy AF. If you haven't seen it... they made her look "scared to death and simutaneously having had instantly having been soaked in filthy water for a week. So her face was pale, water-logged, green-ish, and her jaw was unnaturally stretched open. And her eyes were blackened. Almost like what the Scream mask was, but applied to a real face. (And yes I know Scream came first. It might have inspired that makeup design. Also, that makeup/costume designer should have won some award. Say what you will about the rest of the movie, save for Daveigh Chase, who was awesome, but don't knock the makeup job.)

The spider scene

I was about 9, on holiday in an hotel. Usually my sister and I shared a room, but something scared her. So my mother slept in her room and I with my father. He was still planning for some attractions to visit and did not pay any attention. I just turned on the TV and all by myself watched Per Cemetery... The last scene with the kiss stayed with me for a long time...

I saw Mars Attacks way too young. The aliens absolutely terrified me.
