Zero substantiating information or details in this three sentence "article".

Oh, no, better cut off browser access, allowing only mobile apps from verified devices to have access /s

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 13 points 5 days ago

We’re so fucked. But at least however briefly, a bunch of do-nothing talentless hacks got to pretend to be musicians and artists for a few years. So…. That a thing.

The only good I can see coming of this is a Robinhood AI. steal from the rich give to the poor.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

too bad theres an APP that does the opposite, the "gambling, stocks" one.

And no-one would be accountable

[–] Lucky_Acid@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

This is the crucial step!

An AI would spend more in compute hacking my bank account then it would get from draining it.

US banks are trash, yes.

Their security is generally trash as well, yes (a big 5 bank let you enter case insensitive passwords for awhile).

Their technologies being used, also trash.

But I still don't think this article is true.

I think it might be true. Not in the sense that agents are so clever that they are hacking into online banking websites but in the sense that some people are so dumb they:

  1. willingly give agents credentials to access their bank accounts ("it's going to help me budget/figure out if I'm being overcharged by Netflix" or whatever else the AI-hype convinced them it's a good idea to let an agent do for you)
  2. or let agents run with full access to everything on their machines, including their "my_banking_codes.txt" file with their unencrypted passwords and the email/messaging apps where they receive the 2FA message to confirm their access
[–] GuyDudeman@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

That’s exactly what the full article is talking about. People need to read, man!

Another interesting tidbit: “Most banks have authorized or are moving in the direction of allowing read-only access, which should allow agents to see customer financial information without taking action.”

Imagine if AI forces more and more services to require in-person interaction to authorize transactions and things… AI brings back the bank teller! AI creates traditional jobs! That would be ironic.

I'm positive this is exactly the case.

The article says it's people giving their login info to their AI agent, so nothing to do with the bank security or being hacked in that sense.

My wife works fraud at the largest credit union on the planet. She knows jack about computers and AI and would be asking me about this if she had heard anything at work.

[–] Lucky_Acid@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Yup, they're panicking that we aren't as excited about AI as they are and that we aren't willing to use it or fund it. So they pretend to come for our checking accounts so we'll run to them to save us from them?

[–] ectofunk@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

After continually seeing commercials of that old lady using ChatGPT to order stuff for her, I'm not surprised by this. They're rediculous commercials.

It says they give their AI their credentials to log in, do american banks not offer api access? My handwritten 50 lines python script has been sorting my money based on a budget for a while now, and I don't have to worry about hackers getting access to my api token, as they would only be able to transfer my money internally between my own accounts.

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

why the fuck can random AI agents have API access if open source software can't? why can't we have open source banking apps then, that don't block being used on custom roms and desktop android emulators? why can't our spending manager services like actualbudget connect without a shady middleman?

such a bullshit....

[–] welfare_wizard@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Time to start our own banks, with blackjack and hookers.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 1 points 5 days ago

Believable. When it comes to banks and IT, is the US any better than other third world countries?
