Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I like it. But I also will never own one, so wtv I guess.

People sure are opinionated about architecture... I mean I think both are nice. Although the modern designs do tend to all look the same, which isn't ideal

[–] terranoid@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

It's kind of lame and boring if they look the same. There's a ton of different modern styles that aren't just black and white.

Like look up Nordic Modern, where there is often wood mixed in heavily.

A lot of modern styles just mean tons of natural light, open concepts, indoor/outdoor integration. It's not inherently bad or boring. It's probably more that luxury homes are being built cheap and fast with dentist office modern style that seems copy and paste, without caring about what makes it nice.

I think what people hate is the fake appearance of modernism where it's made to look new and expensive, and not what makes modern homes modern.

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago

If it got more people into houses I wouldn't give a shit, but sadly, its shitty in both ways

[–] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 hours ago

Back then, the builders built homes.

These days builders build houses.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 21 points 3 hours ago

A wonderful thing is the regional differences in door casing styles.

Every house everywhere have doors and all of them have trims (door casing), but they're not the same.

In a lot of old houses/apartments, these are rarely changed. They suck to change because you'll probably want the same for all the doors in the house or it looks weird. So if you want to change/repair just one, you'd want the same profile again and that's not available, because every single carpenter had their own design back in the pre-1950s where stuff like this wasn't mass produced, but made by the carpenter. So you either don't change it or you get the same again. The design caries over either way.

In old large cities like Copenhagen where they obviously had several carpenters, you can tell to this day which neighborhood you're in by looking at the door trims if you know how they look.

These days the new ones are all just flat. No profile. Sure, it makes it easier to maintain, but its a real loss in my opinion.

*Cries in french* Around my hometown I have 4 styles of different houses depending of the microregion they are in. All in a 40 km radius. There is even a continum with hybrids as we move from a place to another.

... That's for older house of course. They are still here, terribly laking heat isolation and in desperate need of renovation, but still here but for every new family that move in the village of for every second brother that stays as an adult, there is a cookie cutter home terribly laking in hot weather resistance that will be desperate for renovation in just 15 years.

[–] GolfFoxtrotLima@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

The mass production of modern Box homes is a mistake, the older homes need to be mass produced

[–] Obviouslywrong@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

The curves and stone aren't really something you can easily mass produce.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Modern boxy homes would be pretty great if their roofs are also designed to be used as a patio area with awnings or solar panels. It just seems like a waste otherwise.

rooftop gardens would be goated

[–] freebee@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

This is the "light" version. The worst are when they don't even have street facing windows, only concrete and garage doors facing the street and all around the house nothing but concrete/tiles, no greenery. These houses make me so sad while walking around a neighboorhood :(

the grey and black rocks garden!

Ι…921 is crazy

That same stucco sterile box style is everywhere. It’s like a generic rich people tract house that you get from a vending machine. Just add water and they pop up, all the same, brick paved driveways, generic minimalist interiors, nobody actually lives there. It’s as empty and uncreative as the people who hired someone else to design it for them.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 61 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Funny enough 1921 is when all the houses from the second half of the comic started.

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 9 points 6 hours ago (6 children)

Not fair to equate bland housing with modernism.

Tell me this building is bland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Assembly

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 4 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

That's horrific

The reflecting pool is so funny... What's there to reflect? The legislative assembly for my province is more breathtaking

[–] MoffKalast@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

It looks like it hasn't been used since the fall of the soviet union and I'm only half sure it's not intentional.

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Blander than any of the Corbusier buildings you’re responding to, tbh

You can blame this guy: Adolf Loos, at least in part.

Major influence behind Modernism. He was mainly reacting against Art Nouveau which he was a staunch critic of.

"The evolution of culture marches with the elimination of ornament from useful objects" is the core theme of his essay "Ornamentation and Crime" .

Basically,

  1. ornamentation causes buildings and useful objects to go out of style.

  2. Things that go out of style require materials and manpower to update.

  3. It is the moral imperative of the designer to make useful things, things that need to be redone are less useful and are wasteful.

  4. Therefore it is the moral imperative of the designer to remove all ornamentation from design.

He saw ornamentation as "degenerate" and equated ornamentlessnes with moral and intellectual development. He also made it a race thing. He used the example of people from Papua New Guinea having tattoos. Paraphrasing: "these primitive savages ornament themselves with tattoos, we enlightened europeans don't. We smart, they dumb. Therefore ornament = dumb bad, no ornament = good smart. See?"

He was a major inspiration behind the modernist movement. It helped that unadorned buildings are cheaper and easier to construct - especially with the advent of cheap glass and steel construction. So you end up with this sort of soulless architecture that gives no sense of time or place - that tells you nothing about its purpose or the people who built/use it.

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 5 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I know it was fairly cheap ornamentation, but the damage his philosophy did to buildings in Germany is profound. They straight up tore the ornamentation off a lot of buildings.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 34 points 7 hours ago

He was mainly reacting against Art Nouveau which he was a staunch critic of.

"I think that thing is ugly, so I'm gonna make something even uglier!"

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 18 points 6 hours ago (10 children)

We can pretend he's the main influence, whilst ignoring the fact that most people prefer square even walls for aesthetic, functional, and - most of all - cost purposes.

I do agree we could do better w.r.t to colour, and millenial grey needs to go. But don't knock the rectangle. Rectangle is good. Rectangle is steady. You can plan on rectangle.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 0 points 51 minutes ago
[–] Hedup@lemmy.world 18 points 5 hours ago

But consider this:

Hexagons - bestagons

[–] ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml 10 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (2 children)

Rectangle good, sure. But rectangle that gives no sense of time or place sad, I think.

I really like some architecture inspired by modernism. Huge FLW fan - fallingwater is my favorite building. But the good modernist or modernist-derived buildings incorporate and emphasize their surroundings and give a sense of time and place by incorporating traditional stylistic elements, local materials, etc.

Also, no pretending needed - this guy was a major progenitor of the style. The style can be a very good fit for the needs of people who commission buildings to be built, and it can look cool in its own right, but regardless of any of that Loos was a pioneering force in the Modernist movement

"Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet, but your cat's are gonna love it."

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

They are building those in my (mainly 1940s) neighborhood and yeah I hate them. Half the bottom floor is a garage, no front porch, front door recessed so unfriendly and people just drive into the garage, close the door and enter the house without ever stepping outside. And so very ugly and builders ask 1.5 million for them. They buy one lot then build two mc mansions on them. I get splitting the lot but we don't need those monstrous buildings.

Looks like in the past people wanted to be Hobbits and now they want to be Robots! I like them both, I think there is more diversity in modern styles than is really depicted here, even if I understand the sentiment.

I'll say this much, when it comes time to replace the roof, Style A is gonna punch you in the nuts a whole lot harder than Style B.

[–] AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

In many European countries there are regulations that your house architecture has to match the overall appearance of the locality. Maybe France doesn't have that or lags behind or it is badly enforced?

So you can be creative but have to match the colors and materials and roof style of the neighborhood. That can be annoying too but I can see how such bland architecture everywhere would be much worse. I always wanted to build a container home castle but it would never be approved.

[–] RichardDegenne@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's up to each city/town to set constraints and regulations for constructions and most places outside historical cities don't bother.

[–] AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Yeah. It's really very local democracy where people can get involved in if such modernist crap bothers them.

[–] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 33 points 8 hours ago (4 children)

I think the creative processor for our simulation is failing. This explains a lot of the wacky things that are happening.

What is the leading character of the older year? Capital 1?

[–] alpine_jim@piefed.social 16 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

common in France, in handwriting the down-tick part is often bigger than the vertical part.
