As a cyclist with a very third-eye view on cars and traffic lights, I promise you they’ll get where they’re going about as fast as before.

Cop cars first
I unfortunately don't see how that could ever work as no matter what work around is given in case of emergencies, they'd just use it for non emergencies anyway
Require an audit trail and third party review.
I mean, we'd need oversight and there seems to be no political will to police the police, so maybe that's moor
Yeah that could work, as long as we keep the third party neutral and actually neutral, not in favour of just letting cops do what they want
Civilian council, with first responders and relations (friends and family) barred from any position. If needed, a tribunal formed with a civilian jury pulled from the same pool as the courts.
This.
I don't see why we need exemptions for anything other than fire and ambulance vehicles.
But what if a black woman shotlifts some diapers?
/s
Only one I can think of would be a high-speed car chase where a violent or reckless driver is speeding through. I'm not sure how common those are nowadays.
Kidnappings, robberies, crimes of similar natures
Is there actually statistics of kidnappings being prevented by cops speeding?
Robberies are just about money and it’s not worth endangering road users for capital.
Beat me to it
What's insane to me is that they've always been capable of doing this, they just never have. I'm not pointing fingers at NY in particular, I'm just saying as a society, this thing could have always happened.
There isn't a single good reason why cars should be able to go anywhere beyond 80mph. It's just unacceptable. If you're impatient to the point where you actively choose being reckless over safety, then you probably shouldn't be a driver.
I'm more extreme in this regard, but I don't think there's any reason any vehicle without active warning flashers and sirens needs to go above the posted speed limit, ever ever ever. Make every speed limit sign update the max speed on your vehicle.
Emergencies happen, and we can't always wait for the ambulance to come to us, especially if we're out in the boonies.
I didn't think about that, good point. It doesn't really change my stance, I still think it would save more lives overall. How much over 70 (I assume that's the average boonies speed cap) do people go in an emergency? How often does that compound the emergency? How often does it improve the outcome?
Speed limits can vary wildly depending on where you are and what the roads are like. Sometimes, it can be as low as 30 mph, 50 is common, 70 typically mostly on highways. I've been through some areas where the limits feel weirdly low. In some cases, I suspect it's deliberate to set speed traps for people passing through who don't know better.
Now obviously, nobody should be pulling 80 in a 30 zone, but in light of some of the speed limits I've personally seen, I absolutely think a hard restriction to the speed limit will cost lives. Maybe it will save others. Maybe even more than it costs. But some will die. Maybe an emergency override would be possible, but of course people will abuse it. I dunno, I'm not sure what the right call is, honestly.
massively reducing our reliance on cars would go a long way. my preference would be trains.
Absolutely. It's just not viable in every situation and every lifestyle. Sparse rural areas, for example, are always going to be extremely difficult to remove cars from since the population is too dispersed for things like a central bus line or trains that reach everyone. I think cars will be impossible to remove from rural areas until automated cars are common. If people can call a public automated car within 5-10 minutes, they'll give them up, but until then, it's going to be very difficult to get people to give up individual cars.
Now, cities, on the other hand, they should be able to ramp up public transportation and eliminate a LOT of cars. Make every bus, every train, every whatever, run every 5 minutes, 10 absolute tops. Make it so people don't even bother to check schedules, they just walk out to the bus stop whenever because they know they'll get where they're going pretty soon. Every time someone sits at a train or bus stop for 15 minutes trying to go get groceries or other every day tasks, they get a chance to sit and dwell on how useful a car would be.
Complicated issue -- thanks for taking the time to weigh in
I kind of have that and it's really inconsistent. I just dial my speed in manually
Oh cool, do you mind sharing some details about what you have? Yeah if I have my way there would need to be massive improvements to the technology and speed limits, but hey one can dream
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic-sign_recognition
Depends on the brand and car but mine for example automatically adjusts the speed to the detected sign. But you can always override it of course. It sometimes (not often but sometimes) detects 50km/h speed limit somewhere although there is 100km/h. Would be pretty dangerous if you wouldn't be able to override that.
Oh, this isn't surveillance. It's just a max speed limiter on city owned cars.
Honestly, I don't know why it took so long for this to happen. It's obvious, really.
Coz it costs 10 bucks extra
All wins all day from this guy
A governor?
I wish Mamdani would run my city, too. Heck, run my country!
Would be cool if they also installed those idle-for-10-seconds-then-turn-off things like they're mandated in Israel.
