I've taken over the community event association in my village. Soon we have a free community-wide garage sale, several workshops (food fermenting, then bread baking, basket weaving, and bike repairs), and a Linux install party.

I am surprisingly hard to destroy.

Sorry, I can't be optimist anymore. Been laid off again, 3 days after my GF lost her job too. I have a mortgage and we have 2 teenagers about to go to college. That job I was laid off from took me 9 months to find, and after only 4 months they closed the department. Meanwhile everything gets more expensive. I'm at the end of my rope.

I'm sorry to hear that. Hang in there man, it's supposed to get better.

Seeing all the people in demonstrations - kids, unionists, elders, families, farmers, nurses, students, punks, artists, ... It stops the feeling of loneliness. And seeing so much young people is the part that gives me faith for the future, that there will be solidarity to overcome anything this depressing world will throw at us.

Election in 9 days

Like the superbowl but it's real and I enjoy the participation

Been doing phone banking and putting up signs

Thank you for your service.

People I like. I meet so many cool people, and that makes me think that we, the people, can build a better future, in spite of the power hungry oligarchy.

Humans will inevitably do the right thing when they have exhausted all the wrong things to do.

[–] Octavio@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

And we've got to be getting close, as we've been trying so many wrong things...

I've been really struggling at work lately. I'm not ready to retire but it sucks so bad and I'm super stressed over it. I spent yesterday cleaning out 95% of my 15k emails. Seeing so many messages from longtimers that have moved on made me realize that we all come and go and maybe it's time for me to go- and it doesn't have to be in an "I'm outta here!" way; just looking for a change.

I'm not sure if optimist is the best term to describe be but at least I don't go out of my way to find the worst possible intreptretation for everything just so that I can then go around complaining all the time and acting as if all the bad things in my life are someone else's fault and outside of my influence.

There's a Bluesky thread (yes I know) going where people are contributing things that have gotten better in their lifetimes, and there really are a lot of things there. Things are still improving, there will always be setbacks and things left to fight for, but it isn't impossible, things aren't hopeless.

yes, but at the same time I feel bad for kids. We are handing everything to them in a destroyed and broken state, including their education and the economy they will need to survive. There is also less joy and authenticity in the world as the boomers break everything in one last fit of childishness and self centeredness before they kick the bucket. They have taught the world that being shitty to each other is the only way to go. Everything is now monstrous.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I feel bad too, I keep apologizing to my kids. I'm determined to show them a different way at home. I worked very hard with the oldest to make sure he has a mature sense of empathy and compassion. He's turning 21 this year and he grew up to be not like the others. My youngest is just starting school, he has more severe autism and it's harder for him, but I'm working with him to make sure he understands and develops healthy coping mechanisms. We can't change the rest of the world, but at least we can try with the people in our lives. If enough of us do that, the future will be better. I have faith that good will prevail despite the odds.

Im just born like this tbh

I was in the ICU for six months once, even on what every probability said was going to be my deathbed I was hopeful a new set of lungs would come and I would get my transplant, and they did. I had one moment in those six months where I really did think β€œthis could be it” but even that, it was a maybe, I always had hope. I think I would have died hopeful.

For me it’s just an inborne trait or at least a trait I developed so early I don’t remember not being like this

[–] rezz@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Belief in my own capacity to manifest positive outcomes in it.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (3 children)

What gives you hope about the future.

Not being on Lemmy.

Seriously. This place is pretty… well, I have it blocked on my phone along with some other time sucking/doomscrolling sites, and it’s definitely better for my mental health.

What works well thrives, loves, lives and prosper. What doesn't and hates, eventually is superseded, or destroys itself, or shrinks and dies.
This applies to ideas, political movements, civilizations and even species. Life is a self-organizing mechanism, operating throughout the universe, that, although for a time produces suffering, does eventually find solutions against illnesses. By doing so, it rearranges itself into better configurations.

i do want to believe in a better future and because of that i don't even believe that the Big Bang Theory, with its conclusion of the heat death of the universe, is entirely true.
